I second the vote for the Spectra-based fishing lines as a very strong substitute for thread. My favorites for bead weaving are 10 lb. Power Pro and Spider wire Fusion (which is getting harder to find ... I'm somewhat afraid it might have been discontinued). Heavier weights of Spectra lines (50 lb. or higher) work well for some forms of stringing, though jewelry wire is frequently the best bet for lots of things.

Forgive me but are saying that the fireline can pass through a 11 seed bead more than once? Hmmm....wonder what weight dh has in his tackle box?

Thanks. I can't get jewelry wire to pass more once through a size 11 seed bead. Is it me or is there a trick?

you're welcome. i always try to send a copy to the person who made the main beads. i figure if THEY like it, it's not too far off.

yes, if you use 10lb. the 4lb will go through size 15/0s more than once. the 20lb i use on larger stuff.

i totally love Fireline. and i don't remember who here turned me on to it [Lynda beadgoddess, probably]. i'm wearing a bracelet i made with it two years ago - i don't take it off, even in the shower, as a test. it's soft, supple.

Not you. The jewelry wire probably won't go more than once through an

11 seed bead, or a freshwater pearl. So ... useful for things that only need one pass, and no more. The spectra line is better for multi-pass weaving.

If I am using seed beads on jewelry wire, I tend to make my 'basic' beads size 8s or size 6s, at least near the crimps, just so I can 'bury the tail' after crimping. Next to impossible to do if you last few beeds have small holes.

I'm so glad I asked because I was beginning think that I was doing this all wrong. You would have laughed to see how I struggled before giving up on the multiple strand idea.

Yep, it's one of many lessons I've learned the hard way.

I'm going to search for this on the web in case dh doesn't have any handy. I know his dad would but I don't like raiding the house when they're not home. I'll raid MIL's recipe box though. :=)

What do they call their 'house brand'? I've looked at their site, but haven't been able to tell for sure which name applied to the stuff you ordered.

Is its 'drape' like Power Pro? Or more like the 'fusion' type line?

I suspect a lot of it is in the Bead Notes file that has been mentioned a few times recently.

Bead Notes is a compilation of useful info from many RCB sources, and is maintained (and shared with the world) by Sooz. Lots of people have used it as kinda of an encyclopedia of basic beading.

It is a great place to start if you need resources. I think it currently resides on Kandice's server. Can someone provide the link?

]Doesn't the fireline come in different colors?

it comes in "smoke" and fluorescent green. trust me - stick to the "smoke". and it fades over time.

from what i've found, it's actually more expensive on the web than it is from the manufacturer's web site. which doesn't make sense.

It's called Cabela's RipCord Thermofused, a product of Spectra Fused Technology. A quick look at the site shows four types:

Cabela's Ripcord Si Plus - spectra, supposed to be softer than the regular Cabela's Ripcord - Braided spectra line, looks like spiderwire Cabelas's Ripcord Si - Silicone coated Spectra Cabela's Ripcord Thermofused - the stuff I use.

If anything, it's like Silamide. It feels like one strand, smooth, and has almost a waxed feel, especially in the larger diameters. When cut by regular scissors, the grey outer layer exposes a white fibrous core. However, the core is not exposed at all in a finished piece, even with serious wear. Supposedly, it's a plastic coating over a spectra fused core, but it seems to be all one piece. Best thing about it is the price: $9.99/300 yards.

It's not as soft as the Power Pro line that I bought in white, this line has a little more body to it. To me, that's a plus, I like the beaded fabric to have a bit more of a sculptural feel to it.

Thanks. That's exactly what I needed to know...

I'll have to give it a shot. Now I know what to ask my cousin, Xan, to give me for my birthday :-)

Kathy, if I was caught using scissors instead of wire snippers I'd never hear the end of it from dh. He works in the cutting tool industry (machine tools) and is a woodworker and firmly believes in the right tool for the job. Talk about anal...
