Attn: Kandice

had to go to the LBS today for crimp beads. lots of finished products but nothing to hold them together with. she had a suggestion for a wire class, but i told her i would be moving up near Seattle. she said, "oh, that's where [lampworker - don't remember name] is." and i said, "Yes, and Kandice Seeber". AND SHE SMILED AND NODDED. SHE WAS ALREADY FAMILIAR WITH YOUR WORK!

Hey you gals, got a question:

Hubby is threatening to move up to Seattle. He could still work for his same company and he has a friend up there to go fishing with (one of the main reasons for him to consider it). Kandice, are there any areas of Greater Seattle that are like the Beaverton area here? I am not a city person by any means, and living in the burbs is the most I can handle. I dunno if he is serious yet, but I'd like to be prepared.

To make this slightly on-topic, how is the greater Seattle area for stores, shows and places to sell? I see lots of people set up at Pike Place Market. Are the tables other than the permanent merchants there all week or just weekends?

You can e-mail if you'd rather. My address is not munged.

Hey Tanya,

I live in Alaska. Seattle is our destination point for shopping. It is also a central place for selling crafts and art of the Northwest.

Seattle rocks, and if you're not into big cities, there are a lot of suburbs here. The ones I have been to and like are the ones east of Seattle. I live in North Bend, which is more like Sandy or Boring is to Portland. You'd probably like Bellevue or Issaquah. Issaquah is where my husband works, and it's about 17 miles east of Seattle. I would personally choose an area that's further away from the I-5 freeway, because there is a lot of traffic and a lot of people there. (So stay away from Tacoma, Olympia, etc.) Western Washington is full of suburbs, though, and I haven't yet been to most of them. It's wonderful here. There are at least two major local bead shows here that I know about - the NW Bead Society show in the fall, and the Puget Sound Bead Festival in the summer. Both are great. There are literally tons of bead stores here - Shipwreck Beads is here (huge mail order bead company) and we have tons and tons of bead artists living in the area. You can't beat this state for bead availability. As for Pike Place Market - I am not really sure how to become a vender there, but here's a link to them -

Well, she can always come *visit* Tacoma...LOL. I wouldn't recommend living here, though. It's...um....got some problems right now.

I guess my experiences with Seattle in my youth have colored my opinion of the town. I've only been up there a handful of times, and the first few visits just gave me the impression of a big, dirty city. Keep in mind that this was back in the late 70s-mid 80s and at the time I was living in a rural area. To be honest I wasn't terribly fond of Portland either except for the Zoo and OMSI. Now I live here and I love it, so I obviously need to re-evaluate Seattle too. Just wish ya'll had a MAX-type train system. Now, how to convince the hubby that we should spend a couple days in Seattle checking out bead and lapidary shops.... :)

Oh I looked at the Market requirements, yikes! They only evaluate once a year! The Portland Saturday Market at least has openings every weekend if you make it past the jury. But different venues I suppose.

and bead stores. LOTS of them.

Hey, now, if everyone goes running off to Seattle, what am I gonna do when I move to Portland?? ;o)

A couple more things about Seattle, from a person whose whole family lives there: Seattle has wretched traffic issues. I've lived in some of the worse areas on the West Coast, traffic-wise, and I would put them in this order: San Fransisco is the worst, Seattle is only slightly better, Los Angeles is third. Seattle is also the cult capitol of the country; that's not something that would stop me from moving somewhere, as I'm strong in my faith, but When I was a kid, we had a couple of cats go missing, only to be found in a cultist garage, being *experimented* on. This was about 15 years ago, though.

I agree that Seattle's outer areas are really cool. Very un-city, for being in a big city. My favorite area is Redmond; my grama has a home on the top of a hill out there, and the view is spectacular, the air smells brand new, and the squirrels come right up and eat peanuts from your shirt pockets ;o)

Jalynne, I noticed that Tacoma is on the list for one of the most stressful places to live - what is going on? Please feel free to email me privately if that would be better. Since I'm on the "other" coast, we rarely get any news. I was in Portland for Embellishment about 4 years ago, I loved it, but I was just visiting. Patti snipped-for-privacy@aol.com

Oh, honey, I forgot you lived there - I hope you didn't take offense! I've never lived in Tacoma - just know that it's gotten huge and has lots of traffic. :)

They're building a mass transit line right now. Portland is cleaner than Seattle if we're talking about the main part of the city. But Seattle's suburbs are much prettier in my opinion, and I lived in Portland most of my life. I love both places, though - and there are some wonderful neighborhoods in both cities.

Well, it's religiously very liberal. If there are cults, that's one thing, and there are weird cults everywhere. Seattle and it's surrounding areas are full of many many different religions and spiritualities, including paganism and lots of eastern religions, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

ROFL, not at all, Kandice. I'm only here because DH is in the Navy, and they said we had to live here. It's not a place I'd choose, really. I'd prefer much closer to the ocean.

Violent crime is about triple the US average, unemployment is up, wages are down, traffic is insane, housing is cruddy. However, I've lived in worse places, so even though the statistics say it's stressful, I honestly don't find it that way. I had more stress living in Fresno, when there were gang wars going on in front of the building where I worked. Don't get me wrong, i'm not oblivious, but I just don't stress out about my environment. Every city has its quirks...Tacoma just happens to have a lot of them, on paper.
