Beading for Moslems?

I have a really strange question. I have a cousin who converted to Islam many years ago. She and I don't keep in touch but after 9/11 I called her out of concern. We had a lovely conversation and promised to keep in touch. Well, you know how life is. We promise things like that but don't follow thru. Caroline knows nada about computers and I'd be certifiable without mine.

Anyway, she called today. She is holding a family get-together at her parents home in two weeks. I haven't seen that part of my family for almost

10 years so I really want to go. I'd like to make her a little beaded *something*. Can anyone give me an idea of a small beaded something that may be related to her faith? Does anyone know of any free designs? (Christmas designs are obviously not the best choice. ;-) )

I'm not sure what kind of beaded object you have in mind, but a simple, over-all, geometric pattern would be appropriate, perhaps like the tile designs found on the walls of mosques. The Quran has some verses forbidding the making of images depicting Allah's creations.

I knew I'd come to the right place to ask such an unusual question! I don't know anything about the Quran. The only thing I could think of was a small beaded "humbug" scissors minder. I thought I could use her initial for that. It would be easy and fast. I was hoping to do something "special" for her but that's tough when you don't know someone really well.

You might check and see if Moslems use prayer beads.

Only the men-- and they're not exactly "prayer" beads... more like "worry beads". And only certain ethnicities use them-- not Moslims in general. Kaytee "Simplexities" on

Use geometrics. Islam is a lot stricter than Christianity about what constitutes a "graven image" -- that's why all their mosques are decorated in geometric patterns. I don't think there are any restrictions on colors.

Muslims also use prayer beads. A good description of a common type of prayer bead is at

. There is also a description at

If you do an eBay search for islamic prayer beads you'll see several different types.
