Thank you so much for your comments. Quilting is really my "main" hobby, the one that sustains me the most. It warms my body and my soul.

If you haven't guessed by now, I am Mennonite...LOL. I learned to quilt about 6 years ago now, by working on quilts to donate to the MCC auction held every April in Fresno, CA. The quilts are incredibly gorgeous!! The food is awesome...it's just a great weekend all around. The record bid was placed about 5 years ago...over $20,000 for a king size quilt...have forgotten the pattern by now, but i'm sure it was incredible. They are truely works of art. I hope to make and donate a quilt to the auction someday...

Sure you can! Did I mention (since this is my fantasy) that there is never any dust, cleaning, messy bathrooms, unmade beds? I'm not sure if there are invisible fairies or if the place is just magic, but - never any mess! Just music, food, plants, swimming and exercising the creative.

Oooh I'm so glad they do them in other places! I'll have to mark that on my calendar as a potential road trip. I forget that the Amish and Mennonites actually settled in parts of California. Geographical bias.

I used to ...i'm a CA native...Dh is in the Navy now, so we are in WA now...who knows where we'll be next.

in fact, the next time (in the next two years, anyway) you are up this way...i'd welcome a visit....and if you haven't been to Shipwreck, i'll take you there. How's that for incentive?

what about converting the lap pool into a "moat" around the house, with a bridge into the living room, or the house, and a big area around where you would come out and relax/etc (and most of the walls of the house blacked where you don't want the swimmer to peek in). The "moat" would be glass enclosed, perhaps with a section that could be raised so you could be outdoors, too?

Okay, perhaps the wording isn't exactly how I envision it, but hope you get the idea...

why not a wall of "bookshelves", with the shelves being just as big as the containers. If you used doors like on a closet (the kind that fold back, 2 on each side), then you could fold them back out of the way, and close it on the "mess" or those doors like on entertainment units that fold back into the unit.

you could make one section a desk, with a rolling drawer for a beading table (like a keyboard drawer), and I have seen units that have a piece of wood that folds out, with a leg that comes down, that would give you an additional table.

Oh, to have the funds to create one of these!!!

These are great ideas. I should print out all these posts and stick them in a folder for after we move. Like I won't have enough stuff to take with me :)

Why not a lighted, vertically rotating set of "drawers" or shelves (you know, like the old jewelry display cases that rotate at the push of a button?), about 1 foot deep, 3 feet long, divided in sections like typesetting trays, set into the wall so that all but two of the shelves are hidden, with the 2 shelf opening right at the perfect height to view the contents from your worktable and chair..... Want the findings tray? whirrr Want the mixed blues? whirrr Greens? whirrr Tools? I'm liking this!

Yes, it sounds like a great communal workshop space... and the pole is just a fun bonus.

I used to have something similar to this. I had four 10-foot high bookcases when I was in Brooklyn. One was totally open shelves, two had doors on the bottom third, and one had a drop-down desk in the middle. I still have them, scattered throughout the apartment. My ex got custody of one, though. (My dumb!) And sadly, when we moved into our house they had to be cut down because the ceilings were too low. But they're still darned nice. And I got 'em for a song, at the time. Four bookcases (oak veneer), a solid oak queen size captain's bed (for a futon, but I use a regular mattress and box spring now) and a nifty fold-over "stair chair" in solid oak....all for $900.
