Well I rent an older house with 2 bedrooms upstairs. One is mine and the other room is the computert/craft supply/guest room (ha ha no bed). But if I'm going to be doing something I take everything downatirs to the living room. And of course leave stuff there!

My mother's rocket scientist designed his house with lots of bedrooms and bathrooms for his children including a new baby on the way, plus a seperate unit for his MIL, complete with kitchenette and full bath. The MIL unit has a seperate outside entrance, as well as a double locking door into the hall of the family house. My mother bought the house when she was in her 70s. That unit would have been useful for a second income or for someone to live in to take care of her. So far she seems to think she really really needs all the 4800 sq ft in her house! She keeps her drafting table and prints in the studio (apt), with her type and etching plates, etc in the kitchen drawers. Except for "the nursery" the bedrooms all have built in desks, so she has one for correspondence, one for investments and cheques, and one for her computer and writing (including lobbying). She ran out of bookcases, so she keeps her art books in the tall shelves in the big kitchen.
Back to the point though. If you can work it out, having a seperate unit for your MIL would be good for her privacy, for an attendant if your husband (or you) needed one, or for income.
I realize that when I asked about doing work in "craft" rooms there really are two catagories. For beading, embroidery, etc, our projects are portable. On the other hand, for glass melting or silver smithing you're dealing with a studio/shop. I wish you dreams come true for your studio. Might you have a show room (or counter or corner) too? Like a home business that includes showing your work.

oh, yes, i know. but this town has very few rules about ANYTHING except building fences that might obstruct someone else's view.

Yes, I expect to have some open space. I don't know that it will include a permanent show area, but there will be enough space for studio shows and sales. There will also be an area set up for photography. Permanently. Not used for anything else. So that I can take pictures without having to take an hour to set everything up first! Barbara Dream Master

I'm partial to overshot water wheels. Can we add one of those to our fantasy? It might actually be useful, too. It could turn a spit on the barbeque, or do some other bit of rube-goldberg work.
