Fabulous beaded work! I think I'm in love!

Thank you for pointing that out. I'll probably be able to do my entire web with HTML. I was going to use Flash and Java and now decided to go the easy route.

Have you thought about building a SQL database to hold the back end of your check out? I've done something similar and with the right math you can get the bulk discounts built into the database. Just another thought.

Nooooo.

It opens 2 pages for me - a weird splash page that doesn't appear to DO anything and then spawns a new window for the site. There isn't a back button, or any way to scroll and it looks like I need to scroll. It may look pretty, but if you have a site that your customers can't use they won't be back.

exactly. you're an artist. and i understand you wanting your site to be an extension of that . . . . but it doesn't do that if people get frustrated and leave.

These were the two things I liked least about the site. That, and she only shows ONE bead as an example for each genre of her lampwork. (That, IMO, is....you don't wanna know) (....dumb as dirt) ~~ Sooz

Precisely. The place to go nuts with all the cutting-edge stuff is on one's

*personal* page. There, it's no one's business but yours what you want to do... and it won't *lose* you business!

Which is not to say that one can't have a lovely, artistic business website. Just do it with methods that won't make it hard on the customer. HTML really isn't difficult to code, and it's still the #1 choice for business design.

Yeah... I was the author of one of the first websites to have images. I've coded HTML forever, but my business is at the point where I need to put my energies elsewhere and hire someone. I simply don't have the time.

I know it's going to cost me dearly, but I need it done.

This is perfectly reasonable -- there's only so much "you", after all! However, you will have to be careful to hire someone who *does* understand what a business website needs to do, and who won't fill it up with all the latest bells and whistles just cuz their kewl.

One of the reasons it's taking so long to get our shopping cart up is the same sort of problem -- there's only so much "Russ", and there are a LOT of other things competing for his time and energy. It seems like just about everything that has to be done around here has a "Russ bottleneck" in it somewhere -- something that only he can do, so if he doesn't have time to do that part of it, the whole thing bogs down. It's really frustrating.

And remember that most people do not upgrade their computers regularly. There are still a ton of first generation Pentiums running Windows 95 with dial up modems. That's reason enough to make sure that your web site is done in simple HTML without all the fancy bells and whistles.

Keep your screen size small, your background colors unobtrusive and skip the whole animated intro page. A simple web site doesn't have to be boring. It's the message and the quality of the photos that will sell your items. Bead and jewelry customers aren't looking to see how awesome a programmer you are - they just want to see the goods, give our their money and get outta there.

I can't even get that to load. Any site that forces me to have java enabled to view it doesn't get a second look from me. That's irritating. Some sites out there let you choose what kind of a view you wish to have. This one didn't.
