For wire wrappers with deep pockets who need cabs

Heh. I've got Cage picked to play Abishag Shaw if anyone ever does a movie from Barbara Hambly's "Benjamin January" series. He's certainly ugly enough to do the part justice!

]I *loved* the Xanth series :-)

i did, too. for a little while. because i love goofy plays-on-words. then i realized what a misogynist he was, and i never bought another one.

]would you mind telling me brought you to the conclusion that he hated women?

the general feel of most of the books. he always has a way of putting them down. **shrug** i just got tired of it.

i'd have to go back, at this point, and look for specific examples, it's been so long.

Tink, did you see the pictures of her and the gem case she was selling? This woman, whatever her age, has a bod to die for. I was thinking she's in the business somehow -- I mean, like a dancer or something. She obviously works out, doesn't look like she pulled the tops, jewelry and makeup outta the back of the closet, this is the real her (so to speak...) and she's clearly quite comfortable with herself. (I seriously doubt she gives a rat's patootie what anybody on rec.crafts.beads thinks of her, thass fer sure.)

But I disagree that it has nothing to do with sex -- I don't know what this woman does for a living, but she's selling sex. And her auctions seem to indicate it's not having an adverse effect on her business.

Course if I tried something like that it would just frighten people... Mary T. 8-)

Why do people always make fun of hillbillies? That is so irritating. As though that accent = stupidity. If y'all tried that with any other "ethnick group" y'all'd be labelled prejudist.

Maybe I like him better because I've read Piers Anthony's later books and some excellent historical pieces he did.

not exactly. the very first one made me uncomfortable - the girl who "changes" every month . . .

Ah, yes -- the literal personification of the "female intelligence is unattractive" myth. Yeah, I remember being a little bugged by that too as I was reading it.

In my husbands case its because he is a non denominational teaser. He will joke with anyone about anything...even himself. He refuses to step back from being politically incorrect. Oddly enough the people he works with that be in the position to be most offended are not. They recognize that because he doesnt single any group out he sees all people as people. Not to say that this habit of his isnt embarressing at times. I try to be so PC. But to say that Everyone makes fun of hillbillies isnt fair either. Not everyone does. DH does, I dont. Diana

Very true. And I don't find her approach that offensive, though others did. I don't know whether someone egged her on, or she followed her own instincts.

A phrase from H. L. Mencken seems appropriate: "No one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public..."

DH is an exception. He loves and hates people on their own merit and not for externals they have no control over. Sometimes he crosses the line of what I think is hurtful but usually I am proved wrong. The people he teases see it as affectionate and bonding type teasing. But I have seen the other kind of person who will back away from the responsibilty of their hurtful teasing by refusing to own the effects of their own actions...*youre to sensitive* yada yada.. I think the evil is in intent and but its also in the reciever's perception.. how the joke is taken. DH would apologize sincerely if he found he had caused offense. Diana

"Lee S. Billings" >> This particular use of the term "politically incorrect" sets off alarm bells> for me, because so many of the people I hear use it are actually doing so as an> excuse to be flat-out rude. Your DH may be an exception -- I don't know him, so> I can't say -- but there *is* a common usage of "Oh, I refuse to pay attention> to all that Political Correctness bullshit" which translates to "I don't CARE> if I'm being nasty, or who gets hurt by it, I'll say what I like and the devil> take the hindmost.">

I wonder tho if Mr xanthony was making fun of that very myth with that personification....as I believe he has made fun of the male stereotypical preoccupation with getting glimpses of panties. I believe he is poking fun. I could be wrong. I dont know him well.. :-)... i dont know him at all. LOL Diana

Now see, if you were a real hillbilly you'd never say that.

Besides, (referring to the previous attempts at trailer trash humor) people in Iowa where the big geodes woman lives, don't even come close to talking like that. And Southern accents really aren't an indicator of intelligence...

How..er, nice for him, I suppose.

So, was that him in the post below? Now I'm doubly confused. I'm somehow not being "fair" in asking "Why do people always make fun of hillbillies?" (which you interpret as me saying "Everyone makes fun of hillbillies...") and you reply that it's ok because your husband does it to everybody?

Oh well, point missed.
