Frames vs No Frames

What was the verdict? I don't remember.

As much as I dislike frames, it's becoming obvious that the pop-ups I've been using in my gallery are not going to work well with angelfire's customized ads, forcing me to try another tack. Re-doing my website is going to be a pain, but if it's too much of a nuisance to view the pages, something's gotta give...

Well I think the concensus from most was NO frames, but I'm keeping mine for several reasons:

  1. Makes it easier to update.
  2. Keeps the potential buyer on your main page
  3. I like them. LOL

I do have one mini site with art work that has BOTH... you can check it out and decide which works for you:

Also you might want to consider getting a webhost now rather than dealing with the pop-up junk for a freebie. HTH

After reading for over a year what users like and dislike about the websites I kept frames out of my website. I love to use them, but I want repeat customers. I made my entire website as plain and user friendly as I could, of course with help from everyone here.

Instead of using frames I chose to use tables. Do you have that option?

Well, at the moment I'm not worried about customers, per se, because if I want to sell something, I go to eBay. But, I do want to spare viewers from having to go back to the index everytime they want to look at another item, which is why I had the items open in a new window. It also avoids falsely jacking up the page view counter. I had 300 hits on the page just yesterday, and I'll bet 3/4 of them were a few folks just looking at the different items.

I use Explorer for most of my browsing, but I use Netscape's Composer to build my pages. The latest verson of Composer builds in the latest version of the HTML standard, 4.01, which has some nifty new bells and whistles -- but which sometimes won't work with older browsers.

I also use snippets of javascript -- like for opening the new windows without the browser menus or buttons. If you have a pop-up stopper, though, you have to override that program to get the new window to open, and that also allows the ad pop-ups to open as well.

Meanwhile, the lastest version of the Netscape browser has an interesting new trick: if you open a new window that is also linked to an on-page anchor, it opens yet another instance of the browser. I had about a dozen open at one time while proofing the updated index. =:-o

I already have a webhost with Verizon, but it's a measley 10mb. That fills up pretty quickly with all the graphics. Angelfire doesn't use pop-ups any more, because of the blocking software; the ads go right on the pages in banners. Now they ALSO shoot adware at you, read your surfing habits and populate your page with targeted ads. There doesn't seem to be any way to prevent this; even spyware removers don't block them.

I could get a paid version of Angelfire, but it's billed monthly and comes directly out of my checking account. If you're short just one month it reverts back to on-page ads. I can't even afford the measley $5 a month right now (plus the one-time cost of set up).

When I'm rich and famous, of course, I'll have my own server and will be able to do as I please. Until then, I'm in Adware Hell.

Table are always an option, but to put two dozen, plus or minus, large graphics in a table on one page is way worse than frames, IMO.

Just for RCB friends:

For $ 9.95 a month we can provide 250 megabytes of disk space plus

25 email addresses and email forwarding for up to 50 email addresses. You can read your email on our servers from the web using any of three provided webmail clients (NeoMail, Horde, and SquirrelMail ). For spam protection we provide SpamAssassin. Your site can transfer up to 5 gigabytes per month of data. We have MySQL, Perl and PHP on our server, but we do ask that any user provided cgi be approved by us for security reasons. Our servers run Linux.

Accounts come with a control panel ( cPanel - see

) which lets you control things like email. The control panel provides stats on web and ftp usage. The control panel can also install several standard scripts including a bulletin board, guestbook, a countdown box to countdown to a specified date, a search engine, and more. We can support mailing lists, but we're very strict about their use. We don't want our server being accused of spamming. If you'd like us to register a domain for you, the charge is $

15 per year for .com or .net domains. If you have a domain already registered somewhere else, you'd need to point it to our name servers.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Yikes! How can you afford to do that? It's a great deal -- but I'm still broke. :-(

Frames are not good for search engines. My DH doesn't use them for this reason.

bingo. so do i. and while i detest FrontPage, mostly, the one thing it DOES do is let me set borders. if i change one item in the border [menu], it automagically gets changed on all the pages.

I've just discovered a way to use a frame -- without using a frameset. It's a tag called , an inline frame into which you can target a page, all on a regular page. Coupled with a style sheet, this could be the wave of the future for frame-haters.

Example:

formatting link
It's a really rough draft, and looks totally crappy with all those banner ads, but it's a vast improvement over malfunctioning pop-up windows. Don't be scared by the file-not-found message when you first access the page; just click on a link in the menu to make it go away. It does look super-spiffy using my local files without the ads.

I disagree. That's the way I use tables, and my website is very fast loading and easy to use, so I am told.

No - have the images come up in a new window. And have a small navigation bar on every page.

I use

and it's cheap and great. Just another option :)
