I usually put one strand of wire/sofflex in a single strand of beads. But I wonder whether it would be smarter to use two smaller strands.

Tina, If you use the right weight of softflex for the beads you are working with, one should be just fine. Just be sure to crimp enough times to hold it properly. KathyH

Just a string of beads. Most any string. I'm just wondering about the security of using one heavier strand vs two thinner ones.

I think if your wire is the 49-stainless-steel-strand variety, and your crimps are sound, you probably only need one.
I know the break strength is listed for most of these, so you could use that as your guide.
