Kandice, it's one reason I've learned not to discuss the very volatile subject of 'copying' in public forums. There are as many opinions as there are participants and many of them are woefully undereducated on what is and isn't copying or copyright.

Well, my advice would be to not worry too much. :) You're using your own lampwork, you've created several pieces in different colors... I'd say you're putting your own spin on things already. I'd love to see your necklace right next to the necklace in the article. I bet they look quite different.

Here's the story - this is from a post a WC:
"For the Obsession exhibit at the Alexandria Gathering we could submit 2 beads for jurying and they couldn't be multi-piece beads. So I invented two new designs, a frog on a yellow floaty innertube, and the one I liked best, a really complicated stack with a cat sitting on a dog sitting on an elephant. They picked the frog for the exhibit, and we got the jury forms back with our slides. The judges had given the elephant stack really low scores, and on the form one of them had written 'a very nice try at a Sharon Peters type bead'. "

The artist under discussion has not taken a class from her.
Most teachers, myself included, give a very straightforward talk on copying and whether their students can/should copy the teacher's designs (distinct from techniques) used in the class. If the teacher is so inclined, students also may sign a combined contract/release form that asks them not to directly copy the teacher's designs.
