Itching to try frit - can anyone help? Kinda OT

Seeking help from the lampworkers - Okay - I am really itching to try some frit - particularly gold iris reduction frit that is coarse/large enough to pull into stringer for the metallic dot effect. I am not sure about buying this because it's hard to see if anything that's for sale on ebay is large enough for stringer pulling. I know Starlia was going to get a bulk buy going, and I am still up for that. But since it is on hold right now, I would like to get something in the meantime. Does anyone here have a small amount they'd be willing to sell? I'm also interested in trying other metallic reduction colors, and also the color shifting frits like Raku. I'd like maybe to get a few colors to sample. I've checked Val's store (she's sold out for awhile) and Carolyn's store (she doesn't have the iris gold AFAIK). Also, I am confused on the sizing - in some places, the larger the number, the larger the chunks of glass. In other places, the smaller the number, the larger the chunks. Can anyone clarify? I am interested in frit mostly to pull into stringer. I may try using frit in the traditional way as well, but mostly stringer. And of course, if anyone has any cane/rods that would be an added bonus!! I will go ahead and read up on WC about compatibility and such. Of course, I know some of this frit is really hard to get ahold of, so if I am just dreaming, feel free to let me know. I am a total frit newbie. ;) Odd that I have made beads all this time and have never tried frit. :)

I'll just send you some. I have chunks of almost everything. Send me your snail mail and I'll mail it out on Monday.

Just a FYI - several outlets for glass fusing are selling molds for making your own murrini by layering frit or stringer into channels. You might want to look at one for making pieces large enough to then pull for stringer. Delphi has both the murrini maker (catalog #13201) and the Bullseye Rod Pod (catalog #128906), which is temporarily out of stock. The murrini maker is a little over 6" square and the Rod Pod is about 10" square. You'd need to run your kiln through a timed fusing cycle, but that's easy enough if you have a digital controller. The only other problem I could see is if the frit is boro instead of soft glass.

Of course there's always a possibility I have no idea what I'm talking about!

Hi Kandice.

You can use any size frit for stringer with the same method on the end of the 1/8" or other fat mandrel size. Head red hot and keep dipping until you get a big enough glob to pull.

What's the number on the Iris Gold, do you know? I have Iris Yellow in size 1, I think.

As for sizing, I don't know what all the companies do. I find, the bigger the number, the bigger the frit. Olympic Color Rods has pictures of the different sizes under the color listings.

I have lots of frit and can't possibly ever get to it...and I want more. ::sigh:: Let me know if there are any specifics that I can send you a little of. There are lots of metallics and I'm not versed enough to recommend any of them yet.

Iris gold = R218. I LOVE the stuff, it's my #1 favorite frit. It's basically transparent R108... if you pull a stringer from it layered onto any amber, it has very similar effects. Gorgeous!

Kugler's 218 is similar and much less expensive.

Kandice, some frits are on their way to you, but only in #1 size.

Oh, but wait - I didn't expect people to just send them!! Not that I'm complaining at all - but I am totally willing to pay!! Well, Kalera, I was planning on sending you something anyway. :)

You're so sweet - thank you! Emailing you, but I want to pay or trade or something.

LOL - All that went whoosh - right over my head. :) Don't need the murrini - just frit. :) I can pull stringer from decent sized frit by melting onto the end of a mandrel. Sounds like an interesting project for fusing, though - and someday I might want to make murrini!

Okay - very cool!! My head is spinning.....All these sizes and number and colors and brands of frit are mind-boggling. I am sure I will get the hang of it like I did with regular glass. Someday. ;)

It's all an evil plan Kandice. I just can't wait to see what you do with them. LOL

Hi Kandice,

This guy has a nice assortment of frits, and what I like best is he has a six page example gallery that shows what the frit looks like on the beads. I have a hard time imagining what it will look like when I see a little pile of crushed glass. Sometimes you just can't possibly imagine the magic it creates in the flame. It seems to me that if it looks ugly in the jar, it's fabulous on a bead! My favorite raku frit looks like kitty litter in the jar! LOL!

I love frit and I admire your beads, Kandice. I can see this pulling you into a whole new dimension. Maybe because of frit being less predictable. Can't wait to see what you'll do.

Dawn, I know you love kitties, but how do you know frit looks like kitty litter in a jar? Do you have kitty litter in a jar?

LOL!!!...Nope....but if I did, I'd barely be able to tell it apart from my raku frit! I pretty much keep the kitty litter in 40 pound bags. And if that were all frit, I'd be in the money! >^..^ Dawn, I know you love kitties, but how do you know frit looks like kitty
