What's Beggar's night?
Tina
I thought that was tomorrow.

Here it is tonight. When the kids dress up and go Trick or Treating!

I'm glad Halloween is on a Friday this year so they can do their Trick or Treating on the actual day instead of early or late. Becki, why do they do it today where you are?
vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from "Tink" :
]Becki, why do they do ]it today where you are?
dunno about Becki's area, but in some cities, beggars night is for "the poor" who don't have money for costumes, etc.

A lot of big cities do it that way. On the actual day of Halloween, a lot of drunk teenagers pull gags and practical jokes that aren't always funny (OK, adults too). The kids are safer this way.

Wow... I guess I'm used to "Devil's Night" around these parts, which is October 30th. That's the night the not so nice citizens commit arson and other horrid things. I think that's why I thought it was so unusual to send the kids out on that night. Devil's night is kind of a Detroit thing, I guess.
You guys are making me really glad I live in Portland! It's so -nice- here.

I'm glad I'm here, too. I've never heard of anything like that around here. The worst that happens is that all the convenience stores and supermarkets put up signs saying that eggs, shaving cream and toilet paper will not be sold to anyone under 21 on Halloween night.

SMAAARRTTT!!!
once (not Halloween) - I went on a late night grocery run -- and when I got to the checkout - two young men I knew were waiting in line with three dozen eggs. Now - no teen is gonna eat three dozen eggs at 2 am in the morning....
I said "planning on a lot of deviled eggs for a picnic tomorrow?" they blushed - and stammered... I said "if you aren't eating them - put them back and stay out of trouble...." they got out of line .... I never saw them after that - so I hope they put them back and left. Here the hospitals offer free x-ray screening of your trick or treat bags due to the fact that foreign objects have shown up in apples, etc.
