Looking For Compact: OT

RCB is one of the finest collection of information sources that I'm aware of, so I thought I'd ask for help here...

For years, I've been looking for a compact (powder type compact) like one my great-grandmother had. It was rectangular, and instead of the top flipping or popping open, the top rolled around the back, allowing the mirror (I think there was a mirror) to pop up.

The rolling part of the top was made up of dark lapis blue strips or segments that were connected together.

I'm hoping someone here will have a lead, or at least can help me find the right terminology to use in my search. I've come up empty in over twelve years of looking.

Have you tried eBay? I've seen hundreds of antique compacts there!

I've been looking there since they were Auction Watch. LOL! I think maybe the term for the lid that I'm looking for is "roll top". Like a roll top desk.

I'll find one someday. I'm sure of it!

There're a couple of collector's books on compacts out there. Maybe head over to the bookstore and scan through? Unusual compacts like the one you describe sometimes show up in the books.

You also might want to try searching with the name Volupte. They were high end compacts and may have put one out with a roll top.

Tink,

Have you asked any collectors clubs? They may be able to help you with the terminology (or even tell you exactly the make model, and serial of the compact you're looking for!)

links to the Q&A of the British Compact Club. Good luck - and if you can't find one, just get this;

- it has dice in the top! (actually don't get it, it has a reserve which always does my head in) Cheers, Rachel M

DH, MIL, and I all hit antique stores often. Many of the stores have items like you are describing and I'm putting this on the watch list. I bet anything MIL can find it for you if we don't.
