making a rosary - need help!

I have to say that I've never seen a rosary in real life. I've looked at the pictures on the internet and so I've gone to town making one for my step-dad's mom's 80th birthday.

I've miscounted the beads and have to go back to the bead store today to get

10 more but I'm wondering as this thing is about to grow to 35 inches long... is that really really big? Or is that about right? If it's just way too big, then maybe I should just get 50 new beads in smaller sizes rather than 10 more in the size I have? The Aves are each 9mm - the Paters are lampwork beads and are 10mm.

What do you think?

Thanks!

thank you :) those are 26 inches long so they would make mine look quite large.

These are beautiful too,

and her beads seem about the same size as mine but she doesn't list the length. I'm thinking maybe if I reduce the number of seed beads between each bead it might cut it down a couple of inches.

Rosarys are not worn. Length is not an issue. And is the 35" from end to end, or when it's finished and in a loop? I've done very large ones with large malachite beads and smaller ones. They all sell. Many people collect them. So the answer is....Any length you make it is right! It's whatever you and recipient are comfortable with. Barbara Dream Master

Thank you Barbara! This makes me feel much better! I also was able to get ahold of my mom and she measured her rosary and it was 30 inches (in a loop) so mine is only 5 inches longer so not so bad.

It's going to be so pretty - I'll share a photo when it's done :) Off to the bead store yet again...

How tall is she? You can make it long if she's tall -- but if she's small, you have a problem. ~~ Sooz

Regarding seed beads between (plural). The rosary, like other prayer beads, is a tactile tool. The fingers slide from one bead to the next. The only reason for seed beads, or knotting, would be to allow flexibility so the beads can be held easily or put into a pocket. You wouldn't want the interruption of seed beads. I personally wouldn't use more than one seed bead between larger beads.

Rosaries come in all sizes... and no -that's not "too long" - I have seen beautiful ones that long.... It will be "impressive" to say the least...

What kind of beads are you using?

I started to make one for myself some time ago - but it is unfinished... Carol made be a really cool Carnelian one --- it's fab...

Actually, they can be worn, under very limited circumstances. Neither one would be a concern when making a rosary that's very long.

Some people wear rosaries as a fashon accessories. This is frowned upon by the Catholic church. The rosary is considered a devotional item, and not an item of adornment.

Some Catholic Religious (nuns, monks and the like) wear a rosary from their belt, so it will always be at hand. Nuns wearing street clothing (not a habit) don't do this. The Religious I've seen wearing rosaries from their clothing are invariably wearing rosaries of small black beads with a silver cross. I've never seen a nun with a fashionable rosary hanging from her belt. That being said, I don't think that a 35" long rosary is too long at all. I have rosaries in all sizes, and my mother has one that is better than six feet (two meters) long! I think that it was made by a real religious overachiever, or someone with an incredibly guilty conscience. One of the Tantes sent it to my Mom when my father left -- to help her "overcome the sin of divorce."

The colors shown just are not right. It's really very soft - sparkly greens and soft purples - it looks like a spring garden. The lampwork beads have little purple pansies on them. I'm very pleased with it, though it's way larger than I had ever envisioned a rosary to be. The purple glass beads are vintage german glass (I'm pretty sure it said german, not czech) and there is a light purple that is frosted and a darker purple that is clear/smooth.

Thanks everyone for all the comments/help! Now my husband wants me to make one for his father (not purple!) - I just can't beleive it - after all the arguments we've had with them about me not being catholic and not raising our kid catholic, now I'm making him a rosary of all things! Wild.

Yes, I was more referring to wearing it as a necklace. I have seen many a nun with one hanging from her belt. Not so common now that so few wear a habit any more. I'm sure those black habits were miserable in the summer! Along with having you're whole head and neck covered. Yuck! So how come we get so uptight about Muslim women who wear long dresses and scarves covering their hair and neck? The nuns used to keep just as much covered and nobody ever said a peep about that (just got me thinking, a dangerous habit in these times...) Barbara Dream Master

You did a great job Pam! I love the use of lampwork beads. This has inspired me to give it a try. Since I have a rosary, maybe a decade bracelet...
