my lampwork set up "deal" (?) of the day...

Oct 25, 2003 24 Replies

This woman is selling all her lampwork stuff - including 4 boxes of glass. Kiln (not digital, no controler), 2 torches, a minor and mid-range, hoses, flashback arresters, regulators, tools of all types, who knows what all is in the rest of these boxes. Fancy glass - I have no idea....

Anyway she said, "why don't you go home, take your time, go through these boxes, check the catalogs, tell me what you would have paid brand new for this stuff, and I'll take half off. And throw away whatever you don't want".

I don't even know where to start . Think this is a good deal or did I just open a can of worms???

Pam

oh and here is more... sorry, not thinking straight. She said she guessed it would come to about $1500.00 but since it has been 2 years and she doesn't remember what all is in the boxes, especially the glass... she wasn't sure and thought it would be fairer to inventory and add it up that way.

So here is what I was going to spend:

$600.00 for a nice digital controler kiln $219 for torch, hoses, propane regulator (don't need one for the oxy generator I just got) $100 extra for tools and stuff

and then all I needed was glass (now I have 4 boxes full, I would have only bought 1/4 of this I think)... and protective eye wear - (which I still need).

So I'm going to end up spending a lot more, and probably got a bunch of stuff I don't need... but got a lot of glass and a lot of it is fancy expensive stuff... maybe I can sell some of the extra stuff, like the mid range burner, the oxygen regulator... etc.?

Crap... I'm thinking it is a can of worms now...

there is a lot of help on here and on WC! if you don't have a catalog for some of the items, or are a little overwhelmed, post the list here. We can help you. If you have something that you just *don't* know, take a pic, and post a link, and someone on here might be able to help.

I think people on here would *love* to help yoiu!

Sounds to me like a good deal... If you'd already planned on spending around $900 -- and NO KILN then you have the Kiln and the GLASS

It's hard to tell without knowing what brand/type torch she has - but the hoses. flash/back arrestors, regulators etc aren't cheap either... It's hard to know how much the glass is worth without seeing it.... If it mostly Moretti - you could just weigh it all and average it out at about $15 lb then divide by half (since that was what she wanted)... if there is colored boro - weight it x $50 a lb and divide by half.

sounds like you got a bunch of goodies...

But that $900 DID include a kiln - a brand new kiln with a controller and everything. Brand new torch and hoses. Everything except glass... Here I'm getting all used stuff plus a ton of glass and stuff I don't want or need to boot... for more than I would have spent for new (it seems). Perhaps when I inventory it all out it won't work out that way - or perhaps I do have $1000 worth in glass here... though I don't know how I'm going to tell what kind it is... I'll figure it out. Worst case I bring it all back to her and she now has an inventory to use to sell it to someone else.

Pam (who is hoping she's not sounding whiney)

Ditto on what Mary said. WC and this ng will be able to help a lot. If you don't need everything I'm sure you'll be able to sell it to someone else.

Personally, I would just buy the equipment new from suppliers. $1500 is around what I spent for most everything except for glass, and it was all new and exactly what I needed. I think you would end up getting a bunch of stuff you may not need if you bought her things, and uit would all be used and as-is - so if something breaks, you're out of luck. And the kiln she is selling is without a digital controller - something you really want to have. If it were me, I would kindly decline, or ask if you can buy only what you need. Otherwise, she can sell her stuff on ebay or wherever. Good luck!

$1000 in glass is a LOT of glass. And is it labeled? Otherwise, you might have a hard time figuring out what the glass is and if it's compatible.

it IS a lot of glass. 4 boxes full - boxes the size of moving/packing/book boxes. One is so heavy I can barely lift it. I don't know if it's labeled. It's separated out and wrapped in paper. It's fancy glass. I forget what she called some of it. Filigree? There is also a bunch of milefori (sp?). and Who Knows What Else. My gut said not to do this and I didn't listen because she is a friend and she said she would make me a killer deal. I really hate second hand stuff (I must be spoiled, I feel spoiled saying that, but it's true) and I'd already spent HOURS figuring out what I was going to order when she offered me this stuff. My husband is the cheapy, and he said go for it (before he heard her estimate of $1500) - he likes a good deal... and here I am in a dilemma and feeling bad about it all.

Pam

Do what your gut tells you. I prefer to purchase new on anything that might have a warranty attached. The kiln will have a warranty and so will the new torch.

Ok, maybe this is not as bad as I thought - except for the glass part. I don't know how I'm going to figure that out yet.

I think the Kiln is from Arrow Springs (had a sticker on it saying Arrow Springs) but no model number - measurements matched the AF99 which sells today for $490.00 with the infinite switch (which I think is what the temperature switch is, right?) and it supposedly has a pyrometer which I haven't found yet - either $50 or $100 depending on size. So total probably $550.00 for kiln - unfortunately they don't have photos of their kilns so I have no idea if it looks the same or not.

Nortel minor and midrange torches $169 and $299 respectively (she said she only used the mid range once - it used up too much oxygen and since she lived in Alaska at the time, oxygen was way too expensive and she couldn't deal - I'll probably never use it either as it would mean needing a second oxy concentrator)

Hose set: $20.00 Oxy regulator (that I don't need since I have a oyx concentrator, right?) $50.00 Prop. reg. $50.00

flashback arrestor set (that I'll probably not use?) $49.00

Total so far: $1187.00 divide by 2 = 593.50

Then there are a bunch of tools - misc. marvers, shapers, tweezers, flatteners, mandrels, etc. so far I've found two bundles of these tools and another bundle of mandrels of all sizes. I have no idea how much these would all cost new - $150? $200? $300? I wish the catalog showed pictures. Say it's $300.00 and I give her $150 for them - that's $745.50... I'll have to check with her and see if estimating these tools seems fair - otherwise I'll have to try to price each thing out separately...

Then the hardest stuff:

There are jars and jars and bags of powder in all kinds of colors - some say pixie dust. Some don't say anything. There is a big jug of grey powder that I suspect is bead release. She even has a smoothie mixer type thing for mixing the bead release. I have no idea about this stuff - how to use it, how to price it. She said there was a bag of "gold stone" too.

There are enamels. Don't know how to tell the diff between pixie dust and enamel though.

The glass... Yes, the glass is not labeled, though it is mostly separated by color/type. 4 packing/moving boxes full. I just have to figure out how that corresponds to Franz's catalog and weigh it. There is Millefiori cane rods and slices, She mentioned opalino, though I haven't seen any (not that I would know what it looked like) and Filigrana, along with a whole bunch of clear and colors. There are rods and rods of color in the middle with clear around them... I don't know what that is called - is that the Filigrana? Perhaps I should order the various color catalogs from them so I can have a visual to match them up? I'll have to call her and find out if any of it is boro or if it all mixes together or not. Does boro glass look different from soft glass?

Ok off to bed. Hope I can stop thinking about this and fall asleep!

Pam

Here's my humble opinion: It sounds like a very good... no, make that EXCELLENT, bunch of lampworking stuff. If you decide to get this stuff, keep it all if you can. You will be surprised at how soon you will be glad you have another torch and so on.

I'm getting ready to order a bunch of filigrana myself. And I just spent $300 on tools. And the pixie dusts and enamels are pricey.

As for new vs. used - Of course, I think we would all prefer new stuff. But depending upon the deal, I would take used at an excellent price any day, provided the stuff is in good shape.

I would ask her if there is any boro in there. Are there any stickers with numbers anywhere on the rods? At this point, I'd say best case scenario would be if it is all Moretti. If so, then at least most of it is compatible.

Wish I were there so I could help you.

Not me, most of the time. Things like hand tools lose nothing by being used, and I'd rather have someone else eat the depreciation. Of course, if it isn't in excellent condition, I would pass on the whole deal. Spending money for broken stuff is no bargain.

P.S.: Did anyone else get the new Dick Blick art catalog recently? They're selling a "Make Your Own Glass Beads" set for ~$100 or so. There is almost nothing in it. A torch head for a MAPP cylinder, a couple of tools and 15 rods of glass (they don't specify what kind). No books or videos, and not even a pair of safety glasses. I thought the whole thing was an accident waiting to happen, and definitely no bargain.

USE THEM! period - no arguments

Yep

. Does boro glass look different from soft glass?>

yes - generally it does -- It tends to be a lightly larger rod diameter - and in much SOFTER colors.... with the exception of one company that makes bright new boro colors - all the boro will be very soft earth colors - like fall....

Can't you just ask her what she had???

I still say it sounds like a good deal -- start weighing that glass! LOL Cheryl of DRAGON BEADS Flameworked beads and glass
