newbie introduction

Hi,

I'm new to this list but not to beading. I have making beaded jewelry for almost 20 years. Not so much lately, but I want to get back into it, which is why I am here.

I started making jewelry as a teenager, and whole still in high school I started selling in shops, flea-markets, and privately from home. I studied jewelry making at Parsons School of Design, but did not get a degree. I also went to GIA ( gemological institute of America) and did get my diplomas in jewelry manufacturing, jewelry design, and Gemology. Technically I am a "Graduate Jeweler-Gemologist". I don't know if there are any other gemologists on this list, but if you have a gem related question, feel free to ask me, and I'll do my best to answer. I used to spend time on rec.crafts.jewelry but when I went back there nothing was going on! It used to be such a busy list, anyone know what happened to it?

I have some health problems that have left me unable to work, and neighbors who would kill me if I set up a metal work studio at home ( too noisy). So what can I do that is quieter? I took up sewing, and collecting vintage sewing machines (including treadles as you have been recently discussing here). But what good is making pretty new clothes if I don't have the right accessories?

I just have to start making jewelry again. I have all the tools and the work bench, I just need to get some beads and such that inspire me. I have lots of left overs but I am bored of them. I sold some & gave away some to clear out my stash, and only kept my favorites. I need to get stuff to mix with them and make them interesting again.

What I really want to work with right now is niobium wire to make truly hypoallergenic earrings. Does anyone here have any experience working with niobium and a good source for it? I also like Bali silver, best sources?

Thanks,

Rebecca

]Funny you should mention them, because so far that is the only place I have ]found it. I want 18 gauge though, and I think they only go up to 20. I ]might try 20 if I get truly desperate.

I may give up and try platinum, though the niobium is so much more interesting looking!

Sounds like every other shop in that area!

Thanks for the link though....

You aint seen nothing yet. Wait til she overwhelms you with the rest of the list. As we say here, get yourself some food and drink and a comfortable chair. But first go to the bathroom.

Sooz is in Berkeley. Can you come to the BABE bead show in Oakland this November. I'll be down (from Alaska) because my mother will be having her

80th birthday party there shortly after.

I'm going to have to remember that you're 4 hours ahead of me.

My husband, Pete, was just advised by his doctor today that he probably has myofascial syndrome, similar to FMS but more common in men. Fortunately, I don't have FMS, but like sufferers of chronic pain, I do suffer from Depression.

When you speak of making jewelry, are you a metal smith?

Do you also know "spiritual properties" of stones? I'm not New Age, but I like to read about those properties, and have been shocked at the pertenance of properties of stones I have acquired.

All the talk about old Singer sewing machines, made me go take another look at mine. I see mine says it was "manufactured in Great Britain". And I also see that your serial number has one more digit than mine.

I also have noticed the jewelry newsgroup has gone to sleep.

We are a wonderfully disparate group. We will enjoy your unique contribution.

Oakland? Isn't that also California? No, I think that is a long way to fly to get some beads ;o)

No need to worry, I'm usually up and online till the wee morning hours.

I know all about myofascial pain. You need a good masseuse or chiro to work out the knots. If you could learn to do massage you could greatly increase his quality of life and save yourselves a lot of money. You basically got to learn where his trigger points are, feel for the knots under his skin, and then work them out. Stretching will also help him, but he needs to have the knots worked out before the stretching session. Prescription muscle relaxers can also help, but not if he has to be functioning mentally or drive.

Yes, chronic pain can lead to depression, but having hobbies can help ward it off. You got to keep busy and not sit around feeling sorry for yourself. Go buy some beads and make yourself something lovely. Get your hubby involved too. Men might not get into beads but they do enjoy metal and wire work.

Yes. I worked in metal. I dont limit myslef to it though.. I love trying new mediums.

I have read about it, but I don't believe in any of it.

What is it? Treadle, hand crank, electric?

Thank you :0)

LOL! I did notice that this is a very active list. When do you gals find time to actually make anything? I used to do bead work while on the phone, but I don't think it would work at the keyboard... especially if I have to pick seed beads out from in between the keys.... ;o)

Let me guess, you laughed while having a mouthful of soda and spit it all over the keyboard/screen? ;o)

Pete had some deep tissue massage, "MOB, MOM; something like that" which gave him a lot of help. He himself does massage, Shiatsu, Reiki, journeying, etc, and Yoga. And a friend of mine does "trigger point release" massage. Of course none of that is covered! And he is disabled. I do plan to start learning Shiatsu. I agree those meds are awful.

I don't feel at all melancholy, or feel sorry for myself. Depression has more to do with an over-full brain than anything else. Like pain can over fill and overwhelm it. Unfortunately over-stimulation (another description of Depression) does interfere with creativity and function, rather than relieve it. Pete doesn't do beads, but works in the garden, does woodwork, does healing work, makes the dog crazy, and putters in the shop.

I don't have a treadle for my sewing machine, but it's built for either treadle or hand crank. It was patented in 1886. Has the torpedo bobbin case.

Well, time for bed now. See you later.
