's not what you take, when you leave this world behind you;it's what you leave behind you when you go. -- Randy Travis
Your background is very impressive - I can't wait to see some of your work.
My name is Shelby (obviously) and I've been beading about two to three years - I've lost track. I'm pretty much a stringer and not nearly as accomplished as a lot of the folks here but I manage to string pretty things that I like. I was selling for a while but I found that it took away all of my joy in beading so now I'm back to doing it for pleasure and I'm much happier.
I didn't know that niobium is truly hypoallergenic. I'll have to try some. I do love the look of it but I've never worked with it at all so I'm afraid I can't help much with sources.
Hi Rebecca, Welcome from another newbie! I just started posting this week myself :-).
Sorry that I can't help with finding the sites your looking for. I am alergic to nickel, and I would love to hear more about this niobium wire. Am I right in assuming that it would be nickel free? Does it come in gages that would be appropriate for some of the lovely wire work that I've seen in magazines?
I hope you'll enjoy this ng. I know that I do already.
It's a name that became a verb. There's a person in another newsgroup where both vj and I hang out, who goes by "kitten", and who is notorious for doing that. Eventually her name became attached to the action. The meme is slowly spreading to other groups by virtue of cross-pollination.
It's nickle free, but may not be suitable for "wire work", depending on what you mean. The color is only on the surace and it scratches off fairly easily with wire tools (nylon jawed ones recommended), and also when rubbed against itself. Harder to work than fine/sterling silver of the same gauge. Kaytee "Simplexities" on
There are a bunch of tables in my workroom--old doors on crates, old spools from the electric co......and my chair is between the table with the computer and the table with the 20 square inches of un-cluttered work surface! Sarajane
Thank you for the information Kaytee, Very much appriciated! I guess what I mean by wire work is some of the fancy, scrolly things that I've seen. Sometimes the wire is wrapped around beads...things like that. I just don't want to buy wire that is going to make my neck break out in itchy red hives. Maybe sterling is the answer as I don't seem to have a problem with that.
Yup... which is why I suggested you try to learn how to do it.
Sufferers of chronic pain often do because they miss their former life. They cant do all the things they used to do and they don't know what to try next. They also suffer from stress which can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed, and that too can lead to depression if they cant find a way to cope. If you do feel sorry for yourself , doing something nice for yourself could help cheer you up. But if you say you don't, then who am I to disagree? I just met you.
I understand depression can interfere with creativity, but sometime depression can also be a great source of inspiration.
Makes the dog crazy... got to love that part! :o) Glad he keeps busy.
Cool. You have to find a treadle for it, they are fun, and good exercise too!
Thanks... it isn't done yet. I am still working on more blocks to add, and then it needs a backing and binding. Binding is a scary word... never done that before.
Thank you. Most of it was sold before I gained any photography skills but my mother and I still have many of our favorite pieces. One of these days I'll get around to photographing more of them.
I did stringing, but prefer wire. I do like (American) Indian bead work, but it is VERY time consuming!
I know that feeling. However I can string beads in my sleep so I didn't mind doing it for money. The metal work is what I don't like doing for money, I like to keep it for myself or give to family members as presents.
So far my ear hasn't complained, and I have worn the same earring in the same hole for months. I can't wait to order some... I hope to do it next week.
Umm.. I haven't bought a jewelry magazine in a long time, but yes it does come in all gauges. Check some of the links already sent to me in this thread. The reactive metals catalog has the largest selection so far, but I haven't checked all the links yet. I still have to check Rio, but from what I remember in the past they were always overpriced.
Hi Rebecca, If you need help with the binding, let me know. I've been quilting for 15 years now, and and I also teach quiltmaking. I'd be more than happy to help!
This building isn't well insulated against traveling sound. I can hear everything they do, so I know they can hear me. They complain about me enough as it is because I am an insomniac and keep weird hours. I keep scaring off downstairs neighbors, I'm on my 4th set in 6 years! I don't think hammering metal or using my flex shaft or tumbler on a regular basis would go over too well. I didn't have this problem at my former homes, but this one just isn't built as well. Its safer for me if I indulge in other hobbies and interests that aren't quite as noisy, at least until I can afford a house of my own with a nice basement or garage to set up shop in. Then I can work at 2 am without complaints!
Rio has Niobium and Titanium wire AND findings in a really nice range of colors.
