Oh, Harry!!! (and others)

Heheheh... If I knew I could sell the holes and give the shell away I would do it! LOL By the bead... I know there is several people sellling Paua beads, (laminated ones), like that and people are paying like $8 for ONE bead! I wish they would stop in, but they may think mine are the fake ones where I price so low? LOL Doesn't bother me one bit... friends are much more fun and important to me. :)

I'm about to try this with some of my early stuff -- looking at it now, I think it's underpriced.

Very sound advice, as I have heard this from several other people and I have noticed that my auctions are going really well and I am happy. :) I guess I might raise them a tad when I get my new batch out, because I have been figuring out my cost and what I have made and I will just say that many people got a really excellent bargain. :) I really love trading my Pua the best... much more fun and less stress. lol

Not sure if we have these here, but I will check.. Good idea!

Never dawned on me to check these places.. Thank you!

The only stain glass we have in these parts... we call dirt. lol

Yes.. the glass comes out with a frosted look. Not sure what you mean about the rest.

Oh yea... my life would love that in the kitchen. lol I can't work outside, because it is way to cold, but I was thinking of doing this to etch designs later.

Wonderful ideas and thoughts. Thank you so much.

Do you have bottle return places where you live? Here in Massachusetts, there is a bottle deposit of $0.05, and there are lots of bottle redemption centers. When DD and I wanted to make root beer, we went to a nearby center and bought the bottles for slightly over a nickel apiece. They had loads of different colored bottles.

Old liquor bottles, especially the ones for fancy cordials, are usually made of colored glass. Ask at your nearby package store (that's Bostonian for liquor store) or trendy bar if they'd save broken or empty colored bottles for you. Or you could dumpster dive on Sunday mornings, when they've thrown out the bottles from a busy Saturday night. (Holiday weekends would be the best)

Old dump sites are pretty good for finding glass as well. Bottle collectors take the intact bottles, but the broken ones are usually left behind and up for grabs.

Are there any stained glass hobby shops around? Perhaps you could get scraps that they have leftover that aren't big enough to sell. Or if you have some newsgroups that are local to your area, how about posting to see if a stained glass artist would give you his/her "mistakes." Or even check the local "pennysaver" newspaper to see if someone is clearing out a basement and wants to get rid of Gramma's stained glass that's just kicking around. If the Pennysaver lets you put in a free "glass wanted" ad, so much the better.

One last thought - if you have any of those Restoration Resource kinds of places that take antique fixtures out of buildings to be torn down, ask if they have any broken colored glass. Lots of old homes had at least one stained glass window, and the recycle places always take them out when the house is being torn down.

Good luck in your search,

Following up on my own post --- I just took a quick look at Ebay. Search under "Stained Glass Pieces." I think you'll find some good stuff there. For example, one guy is selling 17 _boxes_ of stained glass for under $35. Not too shabby.

Oh you are so sweet!!! Thank you very much. Anything glass in colors and if possible at lease 1/8 inch thick or thicker. Glass takes a great beating in a tumbler even with cushion fillers, ( plastic beads ). I will be more than happy to pay for your shipping and maybe even for the items. :) I know the limits of a disability income and it's not easy moving around in the world without cash. lol I think this is why I love trading so much.. but the big bonus of trading is the surprise. :)

just in grocery stores--try having people save you some liquor bottles, unless its a bother for you to have them around. We break them up and get 'em from a friend. Skye Vodka bottles are cobalt blue, so are some kinds of bottled water. Some kinds are amber, even some light blues I've seen, and dark brown too. Also, places like Micheals, Hobby Lobby, and Joanne's often have glass items in great colors, and these go on 50% sales during the year. Go to cheapo dollar stores, look at the condiments there too--some pepper sauce bottles are colored glass. Sarajane

Harry,

I have virtually buckets of scrap stained glass. Mostly in nice sized pieces. I missed your post about what you want it for, but if you would like a box maybe we can trade for it.

Let me know if you are interested. Juanita

May fate bless us all according to our deeds.

WOWSERS!!! Yes...I would be happy to trade with you! It will be about a week before I get some Paua shell out of my tumbler. They are getting there shine right now. Yes.. they come out on the 11th, which is Sunday and I would be very happy to send you out some on Monday. What or how much would you want? be sure you think about the postage before you answer that question. I am not sure how much glass you will be sending or the weight. Might want to fix a box and see what the postage would be first. My tumblers hols: 1st is 3 pound, 2nd is 2-3 pound barrels, and my 3rd tumbler is a 12 pound barrel.
