OT DH started new job today! :)

I had mentioned in my intro post that Dh was without a job since january. Well, last week, he got his FIRST call back for any job he's applied for(one that I found hehehe) and was hired on the spot! And it's a job he's GOOD at, too...carpentry. The super bonus is that for our area, cost of living, etc...the pay rate is fantastic! MUCH higher than we expected to find around here.

The downside is that he now has a 60 mile round trip commute, so I won't be taking him to work like I did before. This means the kids and I are pretty much housebound until I reach the point where I can't stand to be here anymore. Then we'll be getting the kids up at 5am so I can get all of us ready to have dh at work by 6:30 am. That also means it'll be 120 miles, total for the day, plus whatever I add by using the car for me and the kids. Blech!

Oh, and in case anyone is wondering...yes, I've been looking for work too, but it seems that you have to be either a registered nurse, or a trucker to find employment in our area. (Hence DH finding work 30 miles away)

This is SUCH a huge relief to my family...we had to ask our parents to pay last month's bills for us...we'd been living on our tax return for four months, and it finally ran out. Both DH and I had been experiencing really bad anxiety attack (migraines, chest pains, trouble breathing, dizzyness, nightmares, insomnia, etc)....and now we feel as though a 50 weight has been lifted from our chests.

And...lol...we'll finally be able to take older ds to Chuck E Cheese for his belated 5th birthday present. Nothing made me feel worse than not having a present for him...I cried about it for a few hours. Actual presents mean everything to a 5 yr old, and luckily, we had some, from other family members, but still...we're his parents, and it hurt. We did spend some time at the park together, flying his kite, and he enjoyed himself immensely.

I just wanted to share our family's good news with everyone, and hope that it brings a smile to someone's face :)

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

And Candace, did you mention your 5 year old boy's birthday problems here? Because I bet you'd have gotten some help from us if you had. PROMISE next time to SAY SOMETHING. (Hopefully there'll be no next time)

Again, though-----CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! How wonderful!! A 60 mile round trip is not a big deal. It'll be okay once he gets used to it. :-)

Candace,

Congratulations!

DH's school is 50 miles away (one way) and for quite a long while we were sharing a car. Luckily my work is only slightly out of the way so he would drop me off and pick me up, but it was annoying because I had to get rides or walk every time we had a meeting at our other locations, and had to leave earlier in the morning and keep him waiting at night (not as early as you would though and not with little kids, thankfully!)

Finally we gave in and got a used car. I am so happy to have the freedom of it again... but of course with insurance costs and all we have decided not to keep two cars when we move to Bloomington and I go back to school, so I'll be going back to carless! Oh well!

Are you thinking of moving closer to DH's job? It doesn't sound like there is that much around you where you are now.

Sorry about DS's b'day. Even though it seems like presents are everything to him now, what he'll remember when he grows up is that he had parents who had time to do things like fly a kite in the park with him!

Yes... Exactly!

I'm carless right now, sort of by choice. I was carless for five years when I lived WAY out in the boonies, and it had a horrible effect on me: I got to the point where I *couldn't* go anywhere. Very agoraphobic. I was finally able to get a car, and doing my very best Scarlett O'Hara impersonation said, "With God as my witness, I will never be without transportation again!"

So now I have two cars: Prairieson drives one of them, and my other is on a long term loan to Jeanne (who I'm sure some of you remember).

*sigh* Stuck here and hating it today.

But anyway, great news about the job (and I love that YOU found it!) and I know what a load that takes off your mind. Things are looking up!

Marisa, actually, we are thinking of checking out rentals in that town. We signed a year lease on our house here, tho, so we'd have to wait until Dec to move. There's a much larger town about 20 miles west of his workpace (people, civilisation! yay!) that we may check out too, but seeing as it's larger, the rentals may be more expensive too. We'll see what happens. :) ~Candace~ your local hemp goddess :)

Congratulations! I'm so happy for you, your DH and the rest of your family.

BTW, the little ones adjust to the early waking and long rides. DD used to travel from our old home to Boston, the over to her day care provider. (About 1.5 hours each morning) She would talk, sing, eat her breakfast, take naps, and generally had a good time with us during the long rides.

One warning, although I don't know how old your little ones might be. When DD was small, she drank from Playtex bottles, the kind with a plastic bag inside to hold the liquid. Somehow, DD discovered that if she pushed the bag against the side of the holder, the nipple made a wonderful squirt gun. I had to wash dried milk off the head liner, windows and seatbacks when I found out and the car began to smell of dried milk. We switched to sippy cups filled with water pretty quickly after that. :-)

HI, Candace. We haven't "met" yet as I haven't been on lately until just a day or 2 ago but I'm sure happy to hear that things are turning around for you. It sure seems that financial stress is one of the worst stressors of all... So I'm glad things are better!

It's cool, Jerri, I hadn't been very outspoken about our situation. :) I do appreciate your kind words, tho! It was kind of one of those things that I felt so overwhelmed by that I couldn't properly express it until it was over. Sorta like child birth LOL

Candace - I can TOTALLY RELATE to the 60 minute commute since I live 45 minutes from a gas station, and will have at least a 45-60 minute commute just to get to civilization. Gotta have a job that will pay for the gas, LOL!!!!! Congratulations!!!!

And next time, girl, tell us about the kid's birthday, OK? We could have taken care of that for you. I know I can spare enough money to help out with something like that.

*sheepish grin* Welllll...noooooooooo...I didn't............but I'll be honest about the reason for that: I'm still trying to form some friendships here, and asking for that sort of help seemed a bit forward to me at this point. Not that I don't think I could find that help here, but it would have just felt awkward, I think. However, knowing what I do from many nights of perusing the archives, I should have known better :)

And, thank you for the congrats! It's so good to have these worries lifted!!!!!

Between you and Sooz (I have to check both my newsreader and google to get most of the messages) I'm feeling pretty rotten about not mentioning how much things had escalated for us. I want you all to know that I am incredibly appreciative of the fact that had I asked, you would have been there for me. My heart hasn't felt that light in a while. Thanks everyone :)

Thank you, Cheri! We aren't sure if I'll keep looking for work now, or wait until older ds starts kindergarten this fall, and we can place younger ds in childcare. I kind of hate to miss out on this time in younger ds's life (he just turned one this Feb), and I don't want to work ONLY to put him in childcare, ya know?

good news -- though driving Hubby round trip to work with kids doesn't sound very cost or time effective.

I think if you get stir crazy - better idea would be to find another MOMMY type who has a car - and would be willing to pick you up say once or twice a week - and take your pack of kids to the park, shopping, or whatever. and let hubby have the vehicle... at least until you can afford a decent used vehicle for you.....

Good reason to "cultivate" a relationship with some other mom's.... getting out of the house...

.... - assuming there is no possible public transportation in your area...

You're right, Cheryl, it's absolutely not time or cost effective. NO, there isn't any public transportation here...the only thing we have are taxis. And I had thought of the whole "find another Mommy" thing, but can't see how to work that without having a car to get started! There aren't any other families with kids around us (we only have a few houses nearby) and I just figured it would wait until ds starts school. I'm mostly alright with that....as I'm used to having only my dh and kids around anyways.

Hey! maybe I can advertise on the web for a Mommy friend! Maybe there's a lurker at rcb who lives in my area (Sikeston, MO) that would be interested in a new friendship. I have lots of time to check things out, that's for sure!

Ds and I did a bead project today...we used my ancient pony beads and some 1mm hemp (ran out of lanyards lol) to make square rainbow keychains. He loves it when Mommy beads with him :) ~Candace~ your local hemp goddess :)

Don't feel rotten. They (we) were just reminding you and all of the rest of us that we support one another. We can't help if we don't know.

But I know why you didn't say anything. I'm not one to ask for help, ever - and these guys have taken me to task for it before. :-)

Anyway - I'm so happy for you and your family.
