OT I am a fool

Really? I asked him, and he said that it's because all members of the cocaine family act as stimulants (Or something like that) and some people react more to it. I'll ask him about the epinepherine next time! Thank you!

It's not the Novacaine alone doing that...it is because the Novacaine your dentist is using has epinepherine in it. Ask him/her to Novacaine WITHOUT the epi....>

yep -- ditto on that ... ... and novacaine is probably the least desirable drug these days ... of course, most docs just tell you they are using Novacaine - because people "know" what that is -- and they are using more modern drugs...

but if you are sensitive to the epinephrine in the mix -- they can use ones without out it - and you won't get that racing heart thing...

Mine doesn't refuse -- he "suggests" - but he also knows I have a high pain tolerance - and can take most "regular" work without anything....

the shots cause me more pain than the drilling ..... unless they are doing something really deep - like a root canal - of course....

I know what you mean when the shots hurt worse than the drilling. Not too long ago I had a very bad infection on my finger. I didn't go see him until it started turning green because I didn't want a shot at a nerve ending. (I've had them in my foot and never again.)

Anyhow, I got it cut without the shots and it didn't hurt as bad as the shots. He said ladies generally do better in the pain department anyhow. He's had to hold down 20 year marines to do the same thing. LOL (He's a navy captain and one of DHs hunting buds.)

I noticed this when I was working in "specimen collection" (blood draw) for the lab at Oak Knoll.... The two worst types of patients were young Filipina dependent wives and young male Marines. The former would have histrionics, the latter would faint. Older Filipina DWs, active duty young Filipinas, "BAMs" and older Marines usually did fine....

**snicker** when Jamie was about 18 months old, i took her in for some kind of vaccination. the doctor made it a habit to have the nurse give the kids their shots, so he could remain the "good guy". the nurse got the needle in Jamie's arm, but before she could push the plunger, Jamie gave her a look that would have killed, grabbed the syringe, and threw it across the room. needless to say, the second attempt was NOT fun!

she also reacts badly to coming out from under anesthetics. two nurses in two different offices [one when she was 12 and one when she was 16] got black eyes as she was coming out. completely unintentionally - it was just her first reaction to waking up in pain

- she swung.

Dear Kalera,

I'm trying to compile a database of sympathetic dentists at the moment. I'd be very grateful if you'd be prepared to pass Donald Wheeler's details on to me ( snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.co.uk)?

If anyone else would like to suggest someone who helped them overcome their fear of dentists, please let me know! See my website

Many thanks in advance!
