Hi, here

formatting link
is what I've beendoing these past few weeks. I'm going to a friend's house to tie ittoday and it's off in the mail tomorrow. The only problem is my sisteris mad at me, She hasn't spoken to me since October, and won't saywhy. The other sister is just being horrid about it and won't doanything but tell me I'm making too much of it. But.... she's not sureif the other sister will let her daughter have the quilt once itarrives. Ok, yes ... this is breaking my heart a thousand ways. ButI'm finishing the quilt with as much love as I can pack in and I'msending it. It's all I can do. hugs to all, Sunny

sorry you are on the outs with your sister. maybe the quilt will help close the gap.

I had forgotten that part of my young life. Mama had 3 sisters. At all times, two of them were not speaking to the other two. Occasionally, it was

3 to 1 but there was always, always a major or minor feud going on. Some lasted for years, some only a few months. One time Aunt Jean asked Aunt Lana to send flowers from the 4 sisters to Great Aunt Victoria's funeral. She specifically demanded that the arrangement be in the shape of an open bible and created with white flowers. When Aunt Jean walked in the funeral home, she took one look at their flowers and snipped "It looks like a birthday cake". And away we went with that one for decades. The squabble over those flowers, hurt feelings, anger and sniping seemed to be endless. Thereafter, at anybody's birthday, my dad loved to inspect the cake and quip, "It looks like a birthday cake". It's a wonder one of the sister's didn't sock him. I guess why I'm sharing this with you is simply to say that in some families, sisterhood is like that. There's no solving it and most sisters live through it. You will. Polly

The crazy block and the table topper are both lovely, Sunny. :) I hope your niece will be allowed to enjoy her quilt.

Sunny, It's very beautiful. your neice will love it. As for sisters...i have

3, and the secret to our getting along is distance....living atleast 15 miles or more away from each other. Not getting into each other's pockets. that way when we do get together, we have a good time.

stiff upper lip, Sunny...it'll work out.

That is wonderful Sunny. Sorry about the sister thing. I have

  1. 5 females is a lot of energy. We often have a very tough time but have made a real effort not to ever get the kids involved. Right now everyone works at being nice and things are good. Hope you get that same thing going soon. Polly's bd cake story makes me laugh at just how silly sisters can be. I love every one of mine but boy they make me crazy sometimes. Hugs to you, Taria

thank you for all the good thoughts. My sisters both live in Phoenix and I live in WA state. Our mom is dying right now. May not make it to Christmas. She is in Phoenix too and they both truly hate her but are caring for her, more or less. One of my sisters is meaner than you can imagine. she moved to Phoenix several years ago, after we left. The other sister has been my best friend for 45 years. We have been together through so many hard times and good times. But now she refuses my phone calls and emails. Things seemed to be fine when I was there in September, but since then I've had no communication from her. The other one sent an email today saying that I no longer have a relationship with our other sister and that I could "send the quilt or don't, but don't try to pretend it's anything that it's not." I have no idea what that crap's about. I can't be there. I physically am not able. Travel is really hard. And the cost of the September visit is still sitting on credit cards racking up 23 percent interest. My husband's employer is preparing for layoffs. I cannot in any way put us farther into debt to make another visit. I really feel brokenhearted and miserable. Mom's too weak to talk on the phone. I have no contact. I feel like I've been launched out of the family without warning.

Why are families so cruel?

Sunny

Unfortunately Sunny, because they can. I haven't seen or spoken to my sister since two Christmases ago but our youngest brother has made arrangements for us to meet on Boxing Day at a neutral restaurant - rather than anyones home - to see if we can start afresh. I hope we can but it is terrible hard on the heart.

Be strong, there are many many people who love you - remember, you can choose your friends but not your family.

Regards, Di

And I think that because they are family we put up with a lot more and go though more angst. If they were not related we would just let them slip out of our lives and not worry about it. (I have a brother who has completely cut off contact with everyone in the family and we don't know why; it especially hurts my mother...). All this to say - enjoy the people who do let you into their lives. Take care. Allison

Di is right, the first thing I thought of when I read this was, "Because they can be". You can be meaner to your family than you can be to anyone else because you know which buttons to push. You can be mean because you know they have to love you no matter what.

Just keep this in mind: (And please know that I am in no way condoning the bad behavior of your sisters) even if they hate your mother, it is the hardest thing in the world to take care of a dying person. Your sister resents the fact that you don't have to do it, regardless of the circumstances. You can wish you were there until you turn blue, the fact is that you can't be and there's nothing you can do about it.

Don't make yourself sicker over it. You can't force a relationship and really, why would you want to? You have your family, you have friends. What more could you ask for?

Cindy

This time of the year especially is a time that can mend fences between family members that have been stressed. You all ready know the worst that can happen. She sends the quilt back. Just know that you have done all you can to figure out what the heck is bothering her. The quilt is lovely. julia

Oh, Polly, what a great story!

Of my six sisters, one did not speak to me for almost ten years, and never has told me why though we have become both friends and sisters again. Another sister is currently not speaking and hasn't spoken to anyone in the family for almost that long.

I have to share two little stories about my sister who lives within driving distance. I think you all know that my mother and I lived in a mobile home court, in very close proximity, and that I sort of looked out for her. On one occasion a few years ago Mom had gone all ballistic on a neighbor over some small thing. We all had felt the sting of her anger while growing up. My mother was genuinely abusive when we were young, and one of the things I loved and admired about her is the fact that she apologized to each and every one of her 13 children for the abuse. Very few abusive parents or spouses outgrow that behavior and acknowledge that they were in the wrong. She was extremely sensitive to caffeine, and I think that getting away from her decaf caused the above-mentioned explosion. I called Mary and told her about the whole thing, and what I had done to try to patch things up between Mom and the neighbor. Mary said quite frankly, "That's why I'm glad that I'm here and you're down there! We love you and thank you for it."

That year at Christmas she gave me a little plaque, and it reads, "I smile because you're my sister, and I laugh because there's nothing you can do about it!" I treasure that plaque and have it hung where it is the first thing I see in the morning and the last thing I see at night. All my sisters have a sense of humor, but Mary really tickles my funny bone!

No matter what crazy things can go wrong with sisterhood, there are always the good things to be thankful for!

My DH has six sisters and only speaks to one.

No brothers either

I hope that it works out for you Di.

Six sisters, six brothers. We always had a baseball side of McCartys. LOL

Five sisters, four brothers and I can't keep track of whom is not talking to whom this week. ..so I talk to all of them and email some of them that have emails. sometimes, it pays to have lived away form home since I got married.

Butterfly (Stay out of Family Politics that way ; )

You know, I think that would be some kind of bliss. At least they couldn't ALL ditch you at the same time. You'd have some sibling on your side of the universe all the time.

Sunny

Yep, family Politics is a good thing to stay out of. It's been 20+ years since we lived in the home town and have had one sister visit in that time. Phone calls from them I could probably count on one hand. Contact was always from us so we gave up. My family is not much better. I have a DH and DD and DS that I worry about now.
