OT: I'm moving to Washington!

YAY! I convinced DH that it is best for us (it really is) to move to Vancouver/Portland area. My parents offered to pay me $5K to move out of L.A., AND they will fly down and drive our second car up for us. We found an apartment with 1500 sq.ft., 3bd, family room, and a washer and dryer for less than HALF what we are paying for our dinky 2bd here. How could we NOT move?!

Anyway, I'm just excited about it, but, oh, the MOVE, what a PITA. We're moving in the end of February, so I might get to meet Becki, still ;o)

DARNIT!!! Everyone's moving to Portland!!!

Wonder if the power plants are hiring up there??? And the pay!!! Wonder if Ken would accept "gotta move where the beads are" as an excuse?

Okay, enough wishful thinking...I am definitely in the home stretch of packing! And Ken and I are going out to dinner in a few minutes!

No, jobs aren't easy ANYWHERE, though. My Dh is a computer programmer, and the market is fully saturated, to say the least :o( He's been out of work for over two months now, but living up there, the rent is a lot cheaper (we do have savings), so it makes more sense, considering that we don't have to pay for the move. Up there, if needed, *I* could get a job at a book store (or bead store, or fabric store.....), and still pay rent. DH would stay home with the kids, and that is our plan, if our savings starts wearing thin.

How wonderful that you're moving out of LA. Portland is wetter, but that's not a bad price for the friendly cultural/social environment.

My hubby is a programmer as well. Two years ago he was laid off (we lived in Portland at the time) and we ended up moving up to W. Washington for his new job. We both grew up in Portland and love it there. We love it where we are now, as well. Good luck to both of you!

Well, there's a job in Hillsboro that he is PERFECT for right now, but they won't talk to him, because he doesn't live in the area. We are hoping he can still get that one, though.....

I was born in Portland, lived in Beaverton for a couple years, then moved to Eugene, where I lived for 10 years, then on to California :o) I love it up there! Slower pace of life, much more peaceful :o)

The unemployment rate still sucks up here. 7.6% the last time I saw stats for Oregon, and I think it was higher (8%?) in the Metro area. Vancouver was at 12% the last numbers I heard.

Traffic between Vancouver and Portland is a royal pain. Last Thursday at

6pm it took 25 minutes for us to go the 3 friggin miles on I-5 between the I-84 exit and Portland Meadows. Unfortunately 26 out west isn't any better.

On the bright side:

No sales tax in Oregon. Cheap car registration for OR, if you live in Vancouver I think WA still has a vehicle tax. Public transportation in the Metro area rocks! And rental housing is relatively inexpensive. I still don't understand the people that spend $140k to live in a "cardboard" rowhouse with a teeny tiny yard though. We rent a 3bed, 2bath house with bonus room, 2car garage and big backyard in the Beaverton area for $935/month. Someday we will buy a house, once we figure out where we are going to stay put. Oh, and business registration is fairly painless.

All too true. :) The high unemployment rate in OR may be the reason that the job in Hillsboro was refused to your husband - because they want to try and hire people who currently live in Oregon. Not all companies do that, though. If you don't mind moving a bit farther north, try looking at Costco main office. This is where my husband got his job, and they are a wonderful company to work for.

Washington's car registration fees are far, far more expensive than Oregon's, so that's a plus for living on the Portland side. I am guessing that if you're from anywhere in CA that has a lot of people, the traffic in OR or WA will not be too much or a surprise for you. Having lived on both sides of the river, I would say that living on the east side is generally less expensive, and has less traffic than living on the west side. But definitely do try and live on the same side of the river that you work on, because crossing the river during rush hour is a pain in the rear.

Hope all goes well, Kyla! Sounds like a good move to me!! And I know what you mean about the PITA part - I am in the midst of moving myself. It sucks!

Considering she's coming from CA, where the car registrations are very expensive now, i'm sure WA will seem pretty low. I know it does for us, and we weren't even in CA when the registration fees were raised. But still...I'm all for saving money anywhere i can.

Kyla - moving is a MAJOR PITA, both Carol and I are moving in the next few months and I think of her constantly while I am packing. I am PACKED now girl, and living out of boxes. I had to go through three of them to find a cup to take some theraflu yesterday (Not sick; just stuffed up).

I very much want to meet you. I leave on Saturday and will be there on Tues or Weds or Thurs - depending on the drive time! I am going to unpack, return the truck, and then I have settling in things to do. After that, I am going to Utah for some time and help Carol. I am sure I can come see you before the end of February. I would very much like to meet you.

And if that doesn't happen, then hell, Washington is still within driving range, at least for me it is! The move is a pain, but getting a new place (and a new life, for me) is more than worth it! Your new place sounds GREAT.
