Is it really this quiet?

No posts at all for today?? I even went over to Google to check to see if there was a problem with Usenet.

So, I'll start: It's been bloody cold for the last couple of days with an Arctic blast coming straight south to the prairies. I couldn't even run the woodstove for fear of no heat on our pipes and them freezing. The joys of mobile home living.... bah....give me a house with a basement any day.

Overnight the wind chill equivalent was -43°Celcius. For those who aren't aware - Farenheit & Celcius are equal at -40. Any way you slice it, it's cold.

I've been coccoooning with knitting, heat and the TV.... I only went out today to get the newspaper and a few groceries. At least I've had no problems starting my car - I plug in the block heater a couple of hours before I want to drive.

Happy January from frozen Manitoba ! ;>D

It isn't that cold here but I know what you're dealing with. Up north I had a little 2-bedroom cabin (about 900sf) with a wood-fired stove as my sole source of heat. I cannot tell you how bad my claustrophobia was every fall when I had to shinny into the cabin's crawlspace to make sure my heat tape was still in good shape.

*shudder*

Ah, I don't miss my block heater *at all*.

I've got the new wheel finished and built, but haven't been able to get any decent pix due to the crap weather that came in yesterday. I am spinning on her and my-oh-my is she fast!

I'm also working on a pair of socks, the first in ages that I've truly wanted to knit. The yarn is a yummy black Bluefaced Leicester and the one sock I've finished is almost as good as sex when I slide it on.

I believe N. IL is going to get it Sunday night, after I go to church I hope. The cold temps are coming here soon and dropping way below freezing.

I finally have my news groups working right, my isp had to be convinced.

I am working on a pair of thick socks for my oldest son. I am using the "Magic Loop" for the first time, I don't think I will be going back to the 5 stick for a while. I should have finished the other projects maybe. :)

I lost all of my addresses and email contact lists when I tried getting the news groups to work before I saw it was the isp.

I hope the new year is starting out well for every one.

Hugs & God bless, Dennis & Gail

Hello, may I introduce myself. I've been reading and enjoying all the hints and tips - this is a superb NG.

I am retired and live on the east coast of Scotland, in Fife. We have had terrific storms and rain for the past few days. North of us the Highlands have been warned of snow arriving soon and it may well get as far south as this. It has been so stormy that the bridge across the River Forth was closed to traffic earlier today.

My favourite hobby is crochet although when my children were growing up I was always knitting and dressmaking too. My output has slowed lately as I am going into hospital on Wednesday for an operation on my right wrist to correct carpal tunnel syndrome.

I recently set up a photo album at

you would be most welcome to view it. Brenna is the pet name myFather gave me as a child when I couldn't pronounce Bernadette. As Icouldn't have my real name (it was already taken on Photobucket) Idecided to use my nickname instead.I know it's a bit late to wish you all Happy new Year but I do wish ahappy and productive 2007 to you all. Brrrrr, I don't envy you. I don't think I could bear to step outside when it's that cold. It has turned colder here but still above 0F.

Welcome to the RCTY, Bernadette. I remember being in your part of Scotland in July many years ago during a lovely warm spell but it sounds quite unpleasant there right now. Good luck with your surgery.

I see a post from Bernadette via GoogleGroups (barfola) but not through my usual news server (also barf since my ISP "improved" things by outsourcing).

I have a friend living in Filey, on the firth of Forth. She said the weather has been horrible lately - but she's from southern England so she's used to sunshine and daisies all year, yeah? *g*

Wooly expecting as much as 2" of ice by tomorrow night

Hi Bernadette - Welcome.

It is cold and snowy here at the moment. Not as cold as Shelagh has it, of course, but cold for us. The side roads were icy this morning and then we got a new coating of fairly dry snow on top of the ice. I am nice and warm at home, though, and am cocooning with my knitting having done a major grocery shopping before the snow hit. I did have to go out to one meeting but basically I have been here. This is a long weekend and we may get a break in the weather by Tuesday.

I finished the second sweater for the twins today and have decided that since they can't go in the mail until Tuesday anyway, I will make the little hats that go with them. I am going to reverse the colors with the contrast as main color and the white as the pattern. (It should look fine that way and I have no real choice as that is the way the leftover yarn will work out. I am also working on a second glove for DD#2 that I would like to get in the mail on Tuesday if possible. If I didn't have to be the greeter and clean up after coffee hour tomorrow I would be tempted to stay here, watch the Seahawks play the Chicago Bears and knit instead of heading up the road to church. (It is a winding, hilly road through the woods - always a bit of a challenge in wintry weather.)

You poor thing! You know something? In Labrador, we just leave the cars plugged in when it gets really cold. And you know something else? A basement is not complete protection against pipes freezing! I speak from experience here! Enjoy your knitting. That weather is living proof of the benefits of wool. Oh, and I have had about the normal number of posts, I think. Higs, Katherine

Welcome to RCTY, Bernadette. You do beautiful work! That lace is magnificent. Thanks for sharing, and now that you have de-lurked, stick around and play.

Sorry I vanished been out of action. Last night though started knitting my first sock on the round after the encouragement from everyone here. All I can say is addictive it is lol

First day of sun here in a few weeks of wet and windy so we are off out to do some shopping and then a night of knitting after kids are in bed

Many thanks Katherine. I enjoyed "lurking" (isn't that a lovely word?) but I have a feeling I'll enjoy playing even more.
