felted bowls

I'm really more of a part time potter than knitter, but for the past couple of months I've been making some small felted bowls. I'm not sure what they can be used for, although my daughter-in-law seemed to like the one I made for her as did my other son's girlfriend.

What would you use them for?

On top of the chest of drawers (or bureau) to hold keys, coins, other stuff out of the pockets.

In the jewelry box to hold individual items, or a necklace and its matching earrings.

How small are they?

I've crocheted similar "bowl" shapes, added a strap and a fastener and made them into purses.

Oh, those are pretty, Janet! If they are big enough, you could put a small flower pot in them. And the other suggestions are great too.

Higs, Katherine. PS I can't remember seeing you here before, so welcome!

Are those EVER sweet!

I'm not into felting (yet... too many socks in various stages of completion) but would LOVE to try this sometime - can you share with us what pattern you used?

I had the same idea as another - make a moderate-sized one, add a strap and have a handbag. Tiny ones might end up as cat toys around my place. I use little teeny ceramic bowls to hold rings, earrings, coins, so these would do as well. A larger one could replace the cats' toy basket, which I replace every so often with a new wicker basket as they also use their toy basket at a toy. An even larger one would likely end up with a cat IN it around here.

I would use them as gift baskets - put birthday/holiday goodies inside and wrap in basket-wrap. They could be bowls for wrapped candy on the coffee table. Roll up a facecloth and toiletries for the guest bathroom. Dried flower arrangement. Pen-holder on the desk.. or ... or .. and... or...

Have we tossed enough ideas out there yet?

Thanks for all the suggestions of uses for the felted bowls.

While I began with an explicit pattern that I bought, I've modified it and loosened it up so that it's really more a set of guidelines than a pattern. I use two strands of wool throughout plus a carry-along yarn for decoration.

The base is garter stitch. Stitches shrink more lengthwise, so to get a round base I knit an oval that's 14 stitches wide at the max and 25 stitches long. The sides are knit straight up after picking up stitches all around and first knitting one purl row. I pick up a total of between 45 and 50 stitches including what's on the needle. Knit straight up for 10 - 14 rows. The last step is finishing the edge with an icord of 3-5 stitches. I use 5 stitches when the carryalong has very little bulk and 3 when the carryalong for the edge is bulky. And in that case, I may also knit two together in 4-6 places along the last row knitting up to help bring the edge in.

Polka dots are made by making a loose french knot and tying it down an extra place or two. They will look loose and a bit sloppy but when they're felted will flatten out. I use four loops of yarn for the french knots--i.e., I wrap the yarn around the needle four times.
