OT: Spider Web

I have a curving bracket attached to my balcony railing from which I usually hang my bird feeder. I've taken the feeder down for the summer due to an invasion of noisy house sparrows, and their grey furry cousins eating me out of house and home. The goldfinches are quite annoyed.

So, the bracket is hanging there, all alone and lonely -- until sometime in the night. A very industrious, daring, agile and creative spider of an orb-weaving species decided this would be a perfect place to set up her snare. I would never have noticed it except for the rain which had spangled the perfectly-formed, 2' diameter web with droplets of water.

The web, of course, looks as though it had been beaded with thousands of small, crytals beads, just like the spiderweb in "The Waltz of the Flowers" in Disney's original "Fantasia." Unfortunately, it's impossible to photograph: I wish you all could see it.

Ooooooooooooooo. Very cool!

One night, we had a garden spider make her huge web in the front doorway. I was taking DD to school the next morning, and we opened the door (no screen) and went, "AAAGH!"

I carefully removed her, and she came back, but made her web in front of the window. We enjoyed watching her there for quite a long time. We did relocate her egg sac to the woods though. I just wasn't keen on meeting

1000 more of her closest kin, when I stepped out on to the porch one day.

I'm so glad I can't see it. Spiderwebs freak me out as much as spiders themselves. I walked into one face-first when I was a kid and it was just this incredibly *nasty* feeling. Even now, I've been known to stop in the middle of the sidewalk, drop whatever I'm carrying, and start slapping at my face if I walk through one. *Major* ick factor for me.

Cheers, Carla

How cool is that?

Now - to reproduce it in beads and silk.... a person would take forever -- but our dear spider just takes one evening and a little rain from mother nature to create a thing of beauty!

I saw a cool spider in his web in mom's garden the other day - I took a picture

- but the film is still in the camera.....

I hate spiders, but love the webs! (I'm back on newsgroups! I lost the past 4 days and can only access this group via Outlook, not Agent. Nuisance, but at least it works! Plus I only get one day, not the back stuff. Not sure how to fix that in Outlook. I don't like Outlook. But Agent won't pick up this group anymore!) Anyway, one thing we used to do as kids, is to go out early in the AM and find webs that are still intact. Then spray them lightly with either silver or gold spray paint. Then take a piece of cardboard that has been covered with black velvet. Bring that carefully up behind the web until the web and velvet touch. Try to get the whole web at once. (make sure the spider has run and hid behind some leaf). Continue to bring it forward until the section of the web, or all of it, disconnects. You will now have a perfectly perserved web on the velvet. Looks really cool.

Barbara, to get the back posts, click Tools at the top of OutLook, then select "Get Next 300 Headers". Should come up just fine. Glad to see you back sweetie:)

How cool!

One year we were out during the autumn half-term break, and had moored out in the countryside. There was a frost that night and when we woke up the field opposite the boat was covered with frosty spiderwebs all shimmering in the morning sunlight. Magical.
