Christmas spider

Hi everyone,

I need help finding a 12 mm crystal faceted bead to make three Christmas spiders. I'm using this pattern:

but, my DH went all over town for me today to try and find the 12 mm bead and no one has them. I managed to find the 8 mm., but not the 12 mm.

Anyone have any suggestions what I could use as a substitute??? I don't have time to mail order and receive them before Christmas. Is there a super fast way to make a beaded bead that would look good?

thanks for your help...Linda in B.C., Canada

For a start I hate spiders, they make my hair stand on end. However if I had your dilemma I would take a smaller crystal bead and bead around with AB crystal seed beads. Other wise known as a beaded bead. You would get a textured body. You would have to experiment to find what size core bead you needed to get to 12mm. The size 8 you have might work out.

Hi Shirley,

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't feel I had time to start attempting to make beaded beads, and I finally came up with an idea late Sunday afternoon.

I told DH that I was going to the craft store and wasn't coming home until I found a substitution for the 12 mm. bead. I remembered the sales associate saying in the morning, "I have some glass beads, but they would be too heavy", and we brushed that idea aside. I returned to the same store and found round glass crystals in a 10 mm size and a

6 mm. size. The spider only uses two glass beads, so they aren't heavy at all. Dropping down from the 12 mm and 8 mm makes the spider smaller, so I made the legs shorter. They look great!

Now as for hating spiders. The reason I'm making the Christmas Spiders is #1 the legend that goes along with them, and #2 because my youngest niece works in a pet store and had a plan to scare the heck out of her sister with the shedded skin of a tarantula, but didn't do it because she was afraid her sister would have a heart attack. My little spiders are at least "pretty"...(grin)

take care, L> For a start I hate spiders, they make my hair stand on end.

Pleased to know you have got it sorted.

My fear of spiders began when my two older brothers used to get them out of the outdoor loo. I was about 2 at the time and they used to drop them down my back. Shirley
