It's "topstitching" thread-- fits through a sewing machine needle intended for fine fabric. It came on a wooden spool, just like regular cotton thread used to do.... I got it in San Francisco Chinatown, along with the silk brocade I bought for the dress. Used with cotton in the bobbin-- otherwise there's too much of a chance of it cutting the fabric.
