Practice First...Mkaing Mock Up jewelry

First I have to get this off my chest... Thanks all who passed on the "feel betters" from my last post. I'll say this - Ohio is the armpit of the East. LOL. With all this changing weather, I ended up with a touch of pneumonia. Bleh. THEN, over the past few days, we've had snow, then rain that froze into ice, then yesterday was freezing rain/sleet mixed with snow than finally rain. Grrr... So what do I do? I fall on my a$$ on the left over ice. That good 'ol black ice. I should've hitched a ride with Becki, I'm sure she came right by here on her way out west.

ANYWAY...back to the topic....anybody here ever make a mock up of a piece of jewelry with ok materials of similar size/shape so you have the basics down when you do the real thing? How well has this method worked for you? I have an idea, but I'm not sure if I want to gather the gumption, or just wait. I'm just curious if anybody else has thought of this.

AND.... have you ever had an idea to make something, had the general idea of the bead(s) you wanted to use, but nothing jumped out at you? I have yet another idea, but every bead I've looked at just doesn't strike the right note. I'm searching for something different. Out of the ordinary. Know what I mean? I just can't seem to find it. Any suggestions?

Ok, I'm off to cater to my bruised butt.

She probably would be glad of your company at the moment.... Things were not as planned at "the ranch". Hopefully, we can get them fixed tomorrow, or at least arrange for the fixing....

I'm bringing up print outs of the "WELCOME TO CALIFORNIA" mss.

Yes.... It works OK if size isn't really important or if the materials ARE the correct sizes. Like, doing a bracelet with "similar" sized beads to your pattern calling for a specific sized bead will likely result in a bracelet that doesn't fit. Or, trying regular seed beads in a peyote graph made for Delicas is usually OK if you use 15/0s, but rather distorted if you use 11/0s.

My first such "mock-up" was an Egyptian style bracelet-- I didn't have the "correct" beads, so I used whatever I had. I ended up with an unwearable "anklet". It doesn't even fit the one guy I know who WOULD wear something like that....

the bead(s) you wanted to use, but nothing jumped out at you? I have yet another idea, but every bead I've looked at just doesn't strike the right note.

I hate freezing rain! (In spring, the driveway "glaciers -- super cooled water flows onto the driveway and builds up up to a foot of ice. But that won't be for anothercouple months.)

Damn. Pneumonia and a busted ass.

Yeah, I've used brass wire instead of silver to check things first. Though not very often. Usually I can tell pretty quickly and do just enough with silver to see if it will work. I think I'd use brass first if I wanted to do gold though.

As for waiting for that right bead, that's normal for me. I just keep the components hanging around until the right bead sneaks up on it and joins it.

Very sorry to hear of the glitches. Wish I was there to help.

Oh, yes. The only real solution for this is to hang onto the other pieces until you find the thing that makes them work. (Note: sometimes the thing that makes them work is about 6 weeks and another look!)
