Quandry about seller and show

I am wondering what to do about an order I placed for some custom lampwork parrot beads which were being made for me.

I found that this person made really cute lampwork parrots, and wrote asking for 15 of them. The lampworker was really nice and wrote back to me promptly. She even gave me a discount off of her usual price. We wrote back and forth to determine just what I wanted, and she seemed happy to work on the types I wanted (knowing how much you guys like not to be constrained, I tried to be pretty open-ended :) ). She said that she would try to get working on them that weekend but was having an out-patient procedure on Tuesday. She hoped that she could get them out to me that Friday. The last time I heard from her was August 21.

I wrote back saying that I hoped the procedure would go well, and not to stress; if she didn't get them done by that Friday that would be fine with me, but please just let me know what is going on so I can plan the rest of my work, since I have to be ready for a show on October 2nd.

I figured maybe she might need more recuperation time then she thought she would so I left her alone for a while. However, when I still hadn't heard from her by this week I sent her a note, wondering how she was doing and if she had a chance to work on my order.

I haven't heard back from her and that was several days ago.

I haven't given her money yet, but if I am not going to get the beads from her I need to find something else. I won't have enough otherwise. On the other hand, I am really short on money now and can't afford to buy stuff I don't need, and certainly can't afford the order with her PLUS more stuff.

I can't find any way to contact her other then email on her website and haven't been able to find her real name anywhere on the site. She sells on eBay, but they won't contact her for me if I'm not buying over eBay, will they?

To make it even more frustrating, the few other glass parrots I am getting are from someone on JustBeads who seems to have a hard time getting back to me. I had to ask JustBeads to contact her before she sent me a working PayPal invoice. Now I'm wondering if she has sent my stuff yet. Again, she does beautiful work, and I know at least one person has gotten her stuff before and liked it, but having ordered before I moved (July) and not recieved anything yet I am getting kind of frustrated and feeling pressed for time.

Like I said, the show is Oct 2, and all I have is 6 necklaces, 2 bracelets, and a handful of earrings with silver parrots, and I couldn't find ones that match most of the breeds people like. DH keeps saying maybe I should tell the bird society I can't come, since I just don't have enough time. With the enormous amount of homework I am getting after only 2 weeks of school so far, I have no idea when I'm going to have time to make stuff up when/if I get it in! On the other hand, we could really use the money right now, and I could use the emotional boost of doing a good sale (assuming I do :/ ... those cute glass parrots could sure help!!)

I hate to say this -- but if you haven't paid these people for these beads -

-they probably have not even made them yet....and are waiting for you to pay.

I will not make "custom" orders for anyone without payment in-hand....

got burnt too many times with "can you make me this...." and spending the time to do it -- then the person never paid.

Also -- is it possible your beadmaker is in Florida??? and her access to a computer might be zero -- due to the hurricanes...

also- -she might have had some medical complication. I'd say it is unlikely that you will see the beads unless you pay --

I offered to pay. She told me not to pay until she had them made.

I have no idea if she is in Florida. Good point, though.

I am not mad, just trying to decide what to do. I've had a really great offer from someone on RCB that I think I'm going to take them up on... since I agreed in good faith to pay this seller if she does show up again I will have to pay her for any work she has already done but I will probably ask her not to make more new things as I just don't think I can afford both. Do you think that would be fair of me to do?

As to the other (JustBeads) seller, I have paid her already (within minutes of when she sent the PayPal invoice) so I really really hope she's sent out my beads. There were only two of them but I'd still like to see them in time to do something with them.

well - I guess you wil just have to wait and see when you hear from her then! It's very possible that "something else" has come up - and she just has not had time....

or - she's in Florida.... LOL Cheryl DRAGON BEADS Flameworked beads and glass

Marisa, I sure wish I did parrots... I would be so happy to help bail you out! I am surprised by the seller on Justbeads; 30 days should have been plenty of time to complete and send an order. When I was taking orders I told people the lead time was 30 days but that was so I could have a HUGE buffer in case I ran into trouble...usually the turnaround was more like a week.

I would be kind of worried about the seller who had outpatient surgery... it's possible that there were complications. You can send her an email through ebay... you don't have to buy anything to do that. Does she have auctions up? If not, I'd think being worried is in order! It's possible that she went somewhere for the weekend, though, so give her until Monday night before getting *too* worried.

It also might be helpful for you to get on WC and post there, to see if any of the artists there can help you... I would bet dollars to doughnuts that an artist who posts on WC would be thrilled to make parrots for you. (If I had a book with pics of parrots, I'd give it a whirl... but I haven't the foggiest clue where to start. They'd all come out looking like parakeets.)

Kalera,

Thanks for your suggestions. Actually a really nice and talented person from here at RCB has offered to bail me out! I can't wait to see what she comes up with!

I am fairly annoyed with the JustBeads seller. Frankly, I think she is just really disorganized. She was mad at ME for never paying, when it turned out that she sent me a paypal invoice to an address which looks nothing like any address I have (eg it included my name in it - misspelled). I guess PayPal lets you bill to nonexistant email addresses. She also appears to take a week or more to respond to any given email.

The other seller, as you predicted, I am kind of worried about. She seems like a really nice person who really loves birds :). She does have items up on eBay right now (not beads but some other things she makes) but for all I know her husband or somebody is listing her back stock. I have emailed her about once a week since our original agreement so I don't think she's just gone this weekend or whatever. She originally responded really quickly to emails so I don't think she just hasn't checked for 2 1/2 weeks unless something is wrong :(. And I feel really bad because if she gets back to me, say, after the show, or after I've bought things from someone else, I am not really going to want to purchase 15 more items from her... I am struggling with whether or not it would be moral obligation to do so. I would feel really bad if she were in the hospital and THEN I cancelled an order that she was counting on. (Since she sells them on her website anyhow, who knows, it may be a non-issue...they'd just be more stock for her. I just don't know. Right now this is a hypothetical moral quandry).

I was going to send her a message through eBay, then I noticed the dire warnings they gave about trying to negotiate for buying items outside of eBay through that form. I am kind of thinking this counts as that...

Does the seller know that you were needing these for a show? That you had a deadline? If she did I'll bet that she understands that you had to go get someone else to do the job for you and won't be able to buy her product. It sounds like something really went wrong on her end.

Yup, she knows.

Thanks, I hope so. (Well, I don't hope anything went wrong with her, but you know what I mean).

Who is it on Justbeads? It is not Ginger Sanders, is it?

As for the other, I would continue to try to get a hold of her but not stress it. If you don't get them before the show, you don't get them before the show. Sounds to me like the procedure didn't go too well. After a few more weeks and you haven't heard from her, I would file a complaint with the U.S. Post office. That is what got me my money back in a similar situation. As for Ebay, yes they will contact her if you ask a question about one of her past auctions -- it goes directly to her email. If she still has any that you can access, that is.

Whoops, I missed the part where you had not paid the one who sells on ebay. Honey if you have not paid her and have not heard from her, consider the order nil and void. And if she shows up in the future, you can decide then if you still want the order.

No, that isn't who it is.

Thanks for the thoughts!
