Very busy couple of months coming up

Just popping in to say the next two months are super charged for me. Another student has asked to borrow jewels for his fashion show, this one is in November. I'm working on something special for him (yes, I will be posting pics, never fear!). I'm only supplying a couple of pieces because I won't be here on the date of the show. On Oct 10th I'm doing another, private show. On Oct 22 I leave for the Sweet Adeline's comps in Indianapolis. In addition to my jewelery stuff, I have rehearsals and a show on the 21st. And I have a bit of sewing to do. I'm cutting back my hours in the fabric store because my jewelery practice is picking up. It's either that or request that the earth's rotation slows down so I have more hours in the day.

I read every day and keep up with everyone's life adventures. If any one needs to reach me, feel free to email. Life is very full, but I always have time for anyone who needs to chat! love to all

But...Oh. My. God. It's Barbershop music! [holding hands over her ears and running, oops limping, in circles, screaming]

My father sings barbershop, and we were raised hearing it. His favorite quartet is the now defunct Suntones, who tragically left a bunch of albums behind when they disbanded or croaked.

There was a reason that my dad raught all three of us kids to sing in four part harmony, and you guessed it - to sing Barbershop. All three of us are permanently scarred from the experience, and run away at all possible speed when we hear someone warming up their voice.

So, are you a member of SPEBSQA? Is there a SPEBSQA in New Zealand, or is it SPEBSNZ, which doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

Eek, now that horrid song about the boy who got nothing for Christmas is running through my head. (No not because he was bad, but because he didn't have a Daaaaahhhhhh-ddeeeeeee) Arrrgh.

Yes, that's right. I'm very excited about it. Our chorus will be singing in front of about 5,000. The largest audience I've ever sung for was 1,000. I can't wait.

Wow. It is 50 minutes from me.

Will you have any time off at all? Is this a public venue?

Yes dear, it's barbershop. I'm outed. I'm a baritone ('all on fire with loves' desire.....LOVES' DESIRE!!') I also sing jazz, blues, if that's more to your taste (I sing a pretty mean rendition of "Sister' from 'The Color Purple'). So I'm assuming you're not rushing to Indy for comps? LOL

The very same. For an action packed 10 days of singing and partying with thousands of woman. Let me tell you, those dames can PAR-tay. The last social accasion I went to, some of the 'seniors' danced on the tables. No kidding. When I gave up and went home, they were still partying hard.

At this stage our director has asked us not to schedule any social events while we're there. We have a very full coaching and rehearsal schedule in the lead up to our performance. I'm not sure about non-member attendance but you can find out more here;

Ok, it takes a lot to shock me, but I'm floored. BARITONE? OMG....I never, ever would have thought that.

Good luck at the competition - not my cup of tea, but I do appreciate the artistry and talent needed to pull that type of singing off (so to speak).

From the Sweet Adeleines Site: Four-part, unaccompanied, close-harmony singing, with melody in the second voice, called the "lead." Sung in the range between A below middle C, and C above middle C.

Tenor is a harmony part sung consistently above the lead. Although tenor is the highest voice in barbershop harmony, it should not be confused with the soprano of conventional singing groups. The tenor should have a light, sweet, pure tone that willcomplement but not overpower the lead voice.

Baritone covers approximately the same range as lead. The baritone harmony notes cross the lead notes; sometimes sung below and sometimes above.

Bass singers should have a rich, mellow voice and be able to sing the E flat below middle C easily. Bass should not be confused with the alto of conventional groups.

BARITONE?

Whoa, I've never met a chick who could sing baritone before! In fact, I don't think I know any guys who can sing baritone!

Baritone in woman's barbershop is in the same vocal range as lead, that is lower through middle to about an octave above midddle C. Technically I'm a mezzo-soprano, I have a deeper voice than a soprano and can reach below the lower C (I have a 4 octave range, when I practise hard enough!). When I say I'm a baritone, I mean that's the part I sing in woman's barbershop, the parts retain the traditional, male designations; bass, baritone, lead and tenor.

I've heard this - knew a man who was a barbershop singer once -- and he also confirmed that there is a LOT of partying....
