Re: OT: On sensible shoes

How many of us still gravitate towards more "reasonable"

>footwear and how many graduated to pointy toes and perilous heels????

I own some of both, but the times when I actually WEAR something on my feet (I prefer bare, indoors) its a flat, wide shoe. Hiking boots or MaryJanes are the general thing--Duck Boots in winter!! But I do have several pairs of heels, and use them more for decoration than anything else. May once or twice a year--like Halloween--I will wear them long enough to stand there lookin' good....but I don't actually WALK anywhere in them as it hurts my back even more than my feet now! My highheels are all going to be art someday, since they don;'t get worn enough to feel good about themselves as shoes!! Sarajane

Since I broke my foot, I have to wear sneakers and an orthodic innersole thing in them for about a year. It's killing me that I can't wear sandals, so I bought a pair of White Mountain ones. I wore them to work (bad choice, I'm up and down a lot). The next day my foot swelled up and I couldn't walk. It's better now. Patti

I'm barefoot or socks on in the house. Lately I'm partial to slip on backless shoes. Loafers for work and sneakers for everything else. I have purchased heels for weddings and other dressy occasions and have been miserable for an evening, but I doubt I would do that again.

I have some beaded shoes that I love - and they're flats too! Cheri (Bubbee to Emily and Nathan)

me too--I have a very practical streak. I wear things out, and appreciate things made to last. (I got along with the natives very well when I lived in Vermont for a year!!) I also like the way I feel safer walking in the winter in hiking boots or duck boots. Falling is never good, and now I really want to avoid it. Out here lots of people ski---I just want to move along slower than that!! Sarajane

hehehehehhe!!!!!! I've got a picture in my "Celebrations " book of a beautiful pair of polymer clay-ed red high heels in a glass Snow-White's-coffin-ish box, done by Ann Raymond, called "Last Dance". I'm thinking that I can also use decorated shoes on the lifesize dolls I want to do, like Katherine. Sarajane

Hey, Sooz, did the "rubberstamps" part catch your eye in that review?

Thanks for posting it here! Someone else said in an Amazon review that it wasn't for beginners in Polymer Clay, but I strongly disagree. All the basic info is there, and many easy projects. The thing is, there's ALSO lots of advanced info and techniques. I have a hard time knowing when to quit... Sarajane

yep, me too. and when it falls apart, I save any decent snippets of fabric for possible use in quilts or dolls. Sarajane

Careful about vibram soles in winter. I broke my ankle when the soles skidded on the ice, and then stopped suddenly in the soft snow. And gum soles work great as long as it's not cold enough for them to freeze slippery.

Reviewer you know: Kathy Nicklas-Varraso, Boston, MA. I collect books on Polymer Clay Artistry and Beading, and this is one of the best of any genre. An absolute classic, suitable for beginners and more experienced clay artists. If you ever thought of Polymer Clay as a relative to Play-Doh, you won't after reading this lucious book.

Yes, I pre-ordered the book from Amazon and have loved it since I got it.

and: with an ISBN#, we can list the book on Books 'n' Bytes - and we'd love permission to post the review, too.

It's already done. I sent it to Amazon before I posted it here.

BTW, I think they've only got one copy left or are now all sold out. Whoo-hoo!

You certainly have my permission -- Sarajane, according to our friends at Amazon, the ISBN # is 0873495217 , and the publisher is Krause publications. Is this okay with you?

BTW, small world alert: When I worked for DuPont, we sold Krause its typesetting equipment. In all likelihood, Krause laid out Sarajane's book on a machine I maintained for them. :-) They liked working with me so much that when I got my 1955 Buick, they sent me their book on Buicks from 1903 - present. Nice people, out there in Iola, WI.

I love sandals of the Teva type, though not all of mine are that brand.

They work for me because they are adjustable in more than one place: across the toes, behind the heel, over the instep.

I would love it if I could wear them all year, but sploshing through puddles just isn't likely to work. Meanwhile, however ... sandals to the rescue.

My sweetie wears orthotics, too, so no sandals for her.

Luckily she has chronically cold feet...

I wish they made Uggs (sheepskin boots) with better tread. They are splendidly warm and toasty, and conform to your foot like slippers, but they just don't get enough traction in fresh snow.

And I sprained my knee just before flying south for a winter vacation several years ago proving it...
