I can't decide if you were very brave and cool-headed or just downright foolish to be working in such a neighborhood in the first place. Maybe E) all of the above.

Hopefully, DD (yours AND mine) will never have to face such situations.

Amen to that! My daughter takes karate, so I hope if she ever need to protect herself, she'll have the prescence of mind to do it.

This may seem simplistic, but we use the "fake big guy on the phone" ruse (sp?) in parking lots. Any time we have to walk in a parking lot or somewhere questionable, we take out the cell and have a running "oh yeah, I can't wait to show you the hunting pants I got you (or something equally stupid but manly) "conversation"" until we reach the car or the street or the store. It's a great deterrent!
