I'm still trying to figure that one out. We've got one here in town - and also a Lincoln Navigator stretch limo.

The ones where I "just don't get it" are the Cadillac pickups and SUVs. They seem to be an oxymoron.

My sister has one of each, as well as various Cadillac coupes and Sedans. They're not to my taste, but if you need to carry a lot of cargo in a lot of style (saying transporting important people and their junk), it's definitely the way to go.

The "On-Star" thing is freaky, though. It just turns on to ask if you're lost, and then guides you to your right spot. It'll make dinner reservations, call a mechanic or keep you company while driving. When I borrowed Roxanne the Escalade, the On-Star lady immediately noted that I am not Dyane, and wanted to know why I was driving the car. She them called Dyane in the house to confirm that her sister hadn't stolen the car.

I can't see myself needing one, though. I have the Beetle for daily transportation (and am drooling over that self-parking Prius), and we have a small SUV for Bob to use for work. (He carries many work samples, and some of his customers are located in rural places with unpaved roads) When we need anything more, we rent a pickup truck or a van for the day.

One of our neighbors has the Cadillac SUV, in pearl white....DD says it looks like a "marshmallow on roller skates".

I'll keep my Cherokee, thank you. It holds quite a lot, gets better mileage, and doesn't make anyone snicker. And it really CAN go offroad!

I hear a lot of people say they "need" an SUV because of all the stuff they carry -- particularly people who transport kids and their friends around. Sounds to me as if they didn't do their research. A minivan will carry *at least* as much in the way of passengers and cargo as the average SUV, plus it's safer, gets better gas mileage, and you pay less in insurance (partly because it *is* safer!). Unless you also need the off-road capability, there's no real reason to prefer an SUV. But mini-vans aren't trendy and cool...

I agree! I got my Jeep as a hand-me-down from my Mom. She definitely needed the capabilities because of her place up in the PA mountains....a 4 mile dirt road that may or may not have a shallow creek partway along. We've taken it on some pretty serious dirt roads around here and I deeply appreciate its high clearance and 4x4 capabilities. (Geez, I sound like a commercial).

Mike has a '94 Nissan pickup truck. We're seriously considering trading that up to a minivan at some point. It would be nice to have something to comfortably carry my kids and his grandkids together, and we wouldn't lose much in "cargo" space, it would just be enclosed. And neither of us forsees a whole lot of large carrying anymore, at least not after we're moved.

We did a little minivan browsing not long ago. We're both absolutely crazy about the new Toyota Sienna! It has bunches of room, a very comfy layout, incredibly good safety test results, and some way cool permutations like easily foldaway 3rd row seats (EASY!!! I could do it one-handed!). It's definitely on our wishlist.

Okay, I've cooled down now (it's still warm outside)....back to the torch.

well, the drivers are taught how to minimize that.

but according to the one i talked to . . . they tend to "bottom out" very easily. it's that long, long distance between axles . . .

You have chihuahuas! I had a long haired one for 16 years. That's not a typo, she lived a long littered life. LOL She had four litters, she did. And thank goodness I was her midwife for the first. She was totally freaked by the 4 puppies she birthed. I had to show her how to clean them up. Ahhhh...those were the days. :=)

SUVs are minivans that men will buy. Even though women do most of the SUV driving, met still buy the majority of cars in a male/female household. Minivans, as the current version of the station wagon, represent domestication, therefore men reject them. So, they took a minivan, raised the ground clearance, put 4WD in some of them (but not all), did some macho outdoorsy advertising and... Presto! a new market is born.
