When someone steals

Okay here's one for you guys. I'm really sad and upset.

I bought a watch face to bead. I bought 3 different kinds of beads. (not cheap ones this time) I spent 3 days doing it up several different ways. Do it - rip it out - do it -rip it out. (you get the picture) So I finally found a style I liked. I wore it Saturday cause it was Valentine's Day and I wanted to be special.

Well, someone stole it when I was in a public restroom and had set it down on the counter by my purse. They didn't take the money that was sitting right on top of my purse. They took my watch.

So I'm trying to change my attitude from PO'd to no big deal. Should I feel flattered that someone liked it well enough to take it? How do I "get over it"?

Can you believe how tacky people can be? With the crimping stuff, beads and watchface, it was over $50.

I'm sorry, I am feeling very depressed right now.

had set it down

was sitting

Well that totally sucks!

I can't believe the gall of some people. My sister had her purse stolen out of her closed van when she went to take her cart back into Safeways. She was parked really close to the front entrance of the store but in the 15 seconds or so it took her to take her cart back inside someone had opened her van and stolen her purse. within the hour they had gone over to another store in the same shopping complex and started buying stuff.

That's partly why I now do my shopping wearing my backpack style purse. Sheesh!

The funny thing is, this same person actually used her airmiles card for some of her purchases though. That just cracks me up. Here you go and steal someone's purse, their credit cards and all their ID but you still collect air miles for them. Can you believe it?

Sorry about your watch though. :(

Well that's all it takes.... :P

In some parts of Sydney now yu have to worry about kids opening car doors and ripping your stuff (bags, laptops) off when you're stopped at traffic lights.

I take it they got caught. Did they get prosecuted/jailed? :)

Why didn't it ring any bells with the cashier that the CC details and the "airmiles card" details didn't match?

Ick! I don't blame you for being sad, depressed and angry, Debbie - that's only natural. I am sure this person has no idea how sentimentally attached you are to the watch, and shame on them for not even letting that enter their mind as they took it. ((((((((hugs))))))))) One good thing - You are talented enough to create another gorgeous piece of art, and that person has to live with what a cowardly thief they are forever.

I know. People are unreal sometimes. My poor husband didn't know what to say. But he suggested I make extras and when I see someone eyeing my stuff, offer them one. LOL I told him to double what I spend now. He was real quiet after that.

I believe they were charged, she was working with another shady character, and although she was supposed to pay back what she stole I don't think anyone is holding their breath.

Luckily my sister didn't have to pay any of the bills that were racked up but she did lose her nice leather purse and had to pay all the expenses associated with getting new ID and replacing everything else that was in the purse not to mention the wear and tear on her psyche having stores calling her up and calling her a "bum".

details and

The woman was using my sister's credit cards *and* my sister's airmiles card. That's what was so funny, she was getting airmiles for my sister.

Awwwwwwwww Debbie, I'm so sorry. That stinks! I hate the feeling of violation when something like that happens. I think I tend to take things to heart take it personally, when theives don't care who they take from. I know you can do another beautiful piece, but I'm sorry it happened.

. Should I feel flattered that someone liked it well enough to take it? >

Yep... I guess that is a high measure of "value" - when someone steals it.... small consolation, I know....

But at the same time - I hope that they have a horribly guilty conscience - and it brings them NO JOY to wear what they stole from you.

Make yourself another pretty... soon.

Debbie -- first of all, LOVE YOU GIRL.

Second, you have no choice but to get over it, sweetheart. You have no chance of getting it back. You can, and will, make another.

Very true Kandice. When I was about 5 or so I coveted one of my great-grandmother's pins from her jewelry box. I took it. I returned it several years later still feeling very guilty.

< Debbie you do not need Valentine's Day to be or feel special, because you are special! I am very sorry to hear this news of your theft. I assure you that no good shall come to the person that stole it... a kanga.. is on them for what they have done. No joy or happiness will they know until they return the item to you. Look in your local lost and found pages of your newspaper and it just may mysteriously appear. I do not know if it will but you never know. Also inquire to where you were when it was stolen and see if it has been turned in. If it does and they seek a reward for finding it... another kanga. shall befall them as they have not learned from their greed. Pay it and receive 7 fold your good deed. You on the other hand will receive much good fortune from this and... Kia puàwai o wawata katoa. ( May all your wishes come true.) Have a wonderful day and place all this aside for now and make yourself something happy. Even on the cloudiest days... the sun still shines!

That sucks - royally. The thief must have really been blown away by your efforts. If only she'd known that the next one you make will be even more fantastic.

I really have to ask this one question tho. Where do you live that you feel safe enough to keep lay your purse on a counter outside of the stall? I try to be an optimist but the reality of it is that some people are just looking for me to let down my guard for half a moment.

The next time you visit the ladies room - take your belongings in the stall with you!

Actually, there have been cases where purses have been stolen from between people's feet. Purses can also be stolen from hooks on doors. I recall reading about a case where restroom management moved all of the hooks down on doors to prevent theft, and the theives went in and (with a handy screwdriver) moved all the hooks up again.

I personally prefer end stalls.

Sorry to hear about your purse Deb. Since they didn't take your money, it wasn't a matter of income. It was pure covetousness. Some people just steal whatever they want, all of the time. They are not good people to know, although apparently they give good gifts.

Got to go. Tosca is at the good part. Dora

Precisely. Well said. A certain amount of "they're out to get me" paranoia is a virtual necessity, because some of them ARE out to get you!

The problem with this is the assumption both of you are making -- namely, that the person who stole Debbie's watch is like us and HAS a conscience. Far more likely is that the thief simply doesn't care. The rest of us are only in this world to provide things for the thief's convenience, and if we're careless enough to leave stuff where the thief can get it easily, well... That's the attitude of most such people.

Correction...watch. Sorry to hear about your WATCH. Brain slippage again. Dora

Wear it? Fat chance. That piece was evaluated as being worth X dollars, and was probably in the hands of a fence 2 hours later. Most thieves in public places are not "people momentarily overcome by temptation" -- they are PROFESSIONALS.

Agreed.

What kind of watch head did you use?? And what kind of beads and clasp?? That sounds like VERY expensive materials!! OUCH!! I'm so sorry it was stolen from you. But on the other hand, you must have done an outstanding job because someone thought it worth stealing - meaning they thought it was a very expensive watch! That's kind of a back-handed silver-lining kind of compliment, but I wish you had been able to scan it so we all could see it. =:-(
