Yes, I do all my own tumbling and I start from RAW shell right from the beachs of New Zealand and it take me about 2 weeks to just get them. lol They are very easy to drill and you do have to be a little careful and be sure not to get to close to the edge or they will break if you twist you drill or bit. You have to be sure to have the shell supported on something that you can drill into, like a small piece of wood, or anything you don't mind a hole in. :) They are very easy to work with. You can shape them with simple sandpaper, but they are very strong and durable.

If you want to tumble alot get a big tumbler or multi barrels. The smaller the tumbler the easier it is to change over and clean grits. I saw one on there for $50.00 that is a 1 1/2 pound tumbler and would be perfect for anyone wanting to try this and to start with. But we warned... once you start you can't stop! LOL The smaller one would be about the same as the toy one and I believe you may have the Edmond Scientific one? or one from a hobby shop or toy store? I am just guessing.

Also... if you decide that you need a bigger one, it is very easy to sell your used one on Ebay. Everyone wants them... especially if they can get it cheaper than new. So at $50.00 for the 1 1/2 lb tumbler you could easily get your money back. I would recommend the one with the kit that gives you some grits. You can use the 60/90 grit instead of the graded 80 grit, but the shells will be just a bit smaller when they come out.

60/90 grit is a perfect grit for glass and rock. 80 grit is perfect for shells. I always use the graded grits, because they are perfect sized and no variations in the grit. I know this sounds confussing, but it is very easy once you do it the first time. :)

the one i have is from a hobby shop, yes.

it seems to be about a 2-lb tumbler, i think. but putting the shot in it really puts a lot of strain on it.

i'm thinking the 6-lb tumbler with extra barrels is probably what i will want. ANYTHING has to be quieter that what i'm using!

The Lorton ones are very quiet. They have rubber barrels instead of plastic. Now the Thumbler one's on the other hand have rubber barrels, but the end cap is plastic and make a bit of noise. I love Lorton's best and the sound is like ocean waves, once the grits break down a bit, PLUS they are much easier to clean and seal.

2 - 6 lb tumblers would be a very good choice. I may get those after my single 12 pound one or I will just get a double 12 or 20. I haven't made up my mind yet. lol

cool! Johnny got home from work, and they're mine now. **grin** he is SOOOOOOOO sweet!

and now i'm confused. because i think his e-bay site said something about Lake Erie. so maybe he buys them from NZ and he lives here? dunno - but some of them reminded me of a really cool bead Nicole made that i fell in love with - - and i want to see if i can wire wrap them. if i can't, then i'll drill holes in them. **grin**

one of the things i'm hoping for for Christmas is the "attachment" to turn my Dremel into a drill press . . .

Very true. I do get most orders in about a week, but I have waited for up to 4 weeks. It all depends if they have room on the plane when it leaves there and if the USPS wants me to have it sooner. lol

I am happy you were able to buy them. I was afraid someone would see them and bid on them before you had a chance. But that would have been ok, because I would have listed more for you.

I live in Ohio and I get all my shell from New Zealand than I tumble all of it and sell a lot and keep a little. I sell most.

LOL... This is true if I need to order more, but I have a small stock on hand and I have some in my tumblers that will be ready in about 2 weeks. The 1 barrel is in the polishing stage and will be done on the 22nd and the other 2 will be done on the 26th of December. Sorry, but they will not be available for Christmas. ;( I tried hard to have a larger stock before hand, but they sell before I get them finish most of the time and I had a large order to fill a few weeks ago. That's why I am behind and need a larger tumbler. I had no idea these would be so popular, so fast. Most people after buying from Ebay, just buy direct and I fill their orders that way and this is why I don't have a lot listed also.

Very true. I live in Ohio and get my Paua shell from New Zealand and it normally takes 7 days to get an order, but I have waited as long as 4 weeks. It all depends if they have room on the plane and the USPS. Example: I bought an item on December 3, 2003 and still haven't recieved it. I know it's on it's way, but it's just a waiting game now. My source is very reliable and pretty much gets me what I need and want, but the mail takes it's good ole time some times. lol

Does anyone know how to start a new thread? as this one is getting pretty long. lol

I am happy to hear that. I thought that maybe someone else saw and bought them. I sent him email asking about shipping and if he would want me to wait til Monday and send all items and save a bunch of money in shipping and insurance. I will be shipping them today at 11:30 AM EST unless you want me to hold for Monday? Thank you.
