I have a friend in NZ that sells me shells he finds and I do wish I could get them myself, as the postage from NZ to here is very high. Do you sell seashells, (by the seashore), (couldn't resit), to others? If you do... maybe we can make a small deal? I would love to have some more sources for shells. I have been buying all raw shell, because polished shell from NZ is very very expensive. If anyone wants to know if my prices are high or low or comparable.... you can check this out at

Paua Shell is great to have just sitting around even if you don't use it. :) Most people in New Zealand use them for ashtrays, believe it or not. I believe it. When I lived on Lopez island, in the San Juans of Washington State, there was a "shell dump" behind every house, and there were tons of abalone shell along with the oyster, scallop, clam, and crab shells.

I sure miss that kind of living sometimes! We were poor as dirt but always had venison, salmon, and shellfish, plus apples and pears from the orchard and plenty of garden veggies.

I was at a crafts show this weekend and one vendor there was selling wire-wrapped stones and shells. She had an amazing piece of what she claimed was paua but it was red. Absolutely amazing, looked like the piece was flaming. Do you have access to any red paua or was she selling something else as paua?

To the best of my knowledge Paua Shell doesn't come in red. It is possible it was dyed or it was a pink mussel shell. There is a lot of dyed Paua shells and does come in pink. You can see what colors are available here:
