You know, I'd like some dyed paua, but I've never seen any that was subtle enough to be acceptable. That is, to still look like a fairly natural product.

I have never seen a good natural dyed Paua shell. I know they pick the shells with the most color and place it in a dye for a week and then let them dry. Paua Cabs are another item to watch out for. Many of them have an acrylic,(plastic), dome molded on them and they look bad. Kind of like a glass ball sitting there. I am going to have to buy one of each someday to have for a comparision picture. Real Paua is really beautiful. Yes.. I know I sell it, but I am not trying to now. It's truly beautiful!

No, the one I saw was much, much redder, like a flame.

I have a friend in NZ that sells me shells he finds and I do wish I could get
expensive.
No, I don't sell. Simply because I haven't been diving in tooooo long... And you better believe the ashtray story! They used to be extremely common. Getting rarer tho' as the industry gets fished out. Real shame..
I'll let you know if I get any tho' Harry..
I ramble too...

Very familiar.. DH trades there all the time..

I thank you very much and I know they are hard to come by anymore. The friend I have there walks about 10 miles of beach to find what he does, but doesn't dive. All his are on the beachs and rocks. My only hope of getting perfect whole polished shell will be if I buy them from here. There is a great place in Florida that sells al most any type and size shells anyone could possibly want. I posted the link before, but I will find it again. :) Here is the link where you can get whole polished shells of many types and colors:

I have an account there, but everyone wants bank transfers, but I did buy one item from a person long time ago and it still hasn't arrived. I know I will get it for sure, but when is the hard part. I figure somewhere around mid January. Most of the time I get items in 7 days, but if it comes buy economy it takes weeks.

I love NZ too, but I'm biased[grin]. I am born & raised a kiwi and have never set foot out of godzone!
