Hardware store update

i know many of you have heard about how the best place here to get beading supplies is the local ACE Hardware store.

stopped in today on an errand, and just for the fun of it, wandered down the "beading" aisle to see what had changed. i've never known a store to keep changing things so frequently.

there, in front of my eyes . . .

"Swarovski crystals, made in Austria"

$1.99/14

way more expensive than i buy them for . . . but IN A HARDWARE STORE! last time i checked [admittedly a while ago] even Michael's didn't have them.

So are these natural crystals, as in quartz, or manmade?

Swarovski is a manufacturer of optical glass and lead crystal in Austria. They make lenses for hunting scopes and for observatories. It is the optical quality of their glass that made their cut crystal beads so brilliant. They also have some wonderful colours. Eg, their pale colours still have very true colours. More expensive, but worth it.

well, MINE does. and to the best of my knowledge, they all do, but mine seems to get a wee bit carried away . . . mostly because we are such a small town, i think.

the one here doesn't have a craft section, but it does have a cooking section, with a TON of pots and pans and etc. Plus a nice selection of Yankee Candles, etc.

We have an Ace about every half mile here in Los Angeles (well, my part, anyway), and none of them have craft or cooking sections. Weird!

that every 1/2 mile may explain it. this one is one of only three in the entire town. no craft stores. no real bead stores. Wal-Mart is moving in next year, which may change things.

it may also depend on whether they are franchised or corporation owned. i do know that the craft sections [8 rows] change on a continuing basis.

Yeah, it will change things. Everyone in town will flock to it to get really common stuff cheap. Then all the locally owned stores will close and if you need anything unusual at all you will have to go to a larger place or spend hours on the internet trying to find it. And good luck if you need any information or help on anything they sell there. God, I hate WalMart.

**sigh** well, in Paradise, that's already the case [there is very little here except "antique stores" that take advantage of the fact that so many people here are retirees and die off.]

and i'm not fond of Wal-Mart either.

otoh, it's hard to bite the hand of the company that not only gave my son a job at a young age, they've continually promoted him, trained him to take his optician's exam, promoted him again, and are now training him to take on his own optical department -- all at the ripe old age of 19. they have allowed him to set his schedule around his classes at the college he attends. and they're going to pay him so much that when he does graduate, if he decides on a job related to law enforcement, he's going to have to take a major cut in pay.
