2006 Projects?

Thank you - another person suggested that too. Usually something mailed in normal manner and listed as less than $40 will sail right past the customs.

At the other store in town that does that I have shopped there a couple of times. When I leave I do the GOW-under-full-sail- with-guns-at-ready-action and they blink, and do not come near my cart :)

I prefer to deal with UK sellers on ebay and shops for the reason you cited. I subscribe to Classic stitches magazine and although it is shipped surface always arrives so promptly that there is no doubt that it actually is sent via air. My son used to pay airmail rates to send me the odd UK stitching magazine but now sends them surface and they arrive as quickly. He says it is because they still charge by weight unlike here in Canada which goes by dimensions as well. But he says that is changing next year as the UK is going to the dimensions as well. I do find that some ebay sellers quote very inflated postal rates for small items like a chart. I have had my daughter send things from California so I have a fairly good idea of what the postage should be. and no I do not mind paying a reasonable handling fee for packaging. on occasion I have had things sent to her and she in tern sends them on to me in cases where the domestic postage was reasonable and the international rate greatly inflated. ruby

I have read the book and immediately sold every share of stock we had in Walmart. However, when you live 6 miles to the closest store and Walmart is in walking distance (a giant monster in the middle of nowhere) and gas being over 2 dollars US a gallon...well, if I need a skein of 301, I make a run to Walmart.

I agree fully with their treatment of their poor employees with no insurance, too expensive insurance, and non-qualifying part time hours at 35 hours a week. Disgusting. In full agreement.

Well, that's making light of a multi billion dollar a year problem in the United States. It's called shoplifting. I have no problem when electronics stores check my purchases. It helps keep prices lower and it's good for commerce and takes about an average of ten seconds.

Walmart doesn't sell Dimensions Gold kits. I think they sell crappy kits and a handfull of charts. Their entire stitching section is smaller than the closet I keep my stash in! I still believe 72 dollars is a huge ripoff for any Dimensions Gold kit, sold at any store anywhere.

Well, I didn't really mean to make this about Walmart, it's not about Walmart. It's about an LNS overcharging for a Dimensions Gold kit.

Argh! Other retail stores in Canada do the exact same thing as Walmart, and some are even worse. Heck, I am very familiar with a company who is giving their staff full-time hours during the month of December and come January most employess will be lucky to get 12 to 16 hrs. per week. How awful is that? It all relates to no sales, no house for staff. I'm not even going to get into the insurance issue, it's terrible too.

The shoplifters are, by and large, far too clever to be caught that way. Once more, all it does is impede the innocent to no purpose, other than it vaguely resembles a male dog going round lifting its leg to mark the fact, this is my territory, you are here on sufferance.

No matter how much you wish to close your eyes, Wartmart does all these things to extreme! They are known for this, books are written about their techniques, listen to stock market talk and see what they say about Wartmart.

They are the worst employers, perfectly ruthless. For sure many retailers lay off staff in January/ February until sales pick up, obviously they could not employ the same numbers as they need in the December madness. Many kinder employers try to hire on students and people who wish to work for some extra Christmas money, those people know they are there temporarily and it suits them that way.

I think trying to defend Wartmarts practices is like trying to spit against the wind !

I have lots of La-D-Da in my stash and I plan to do them someday, lol but I have lots of plans to do just about everything!

Sadly, there are companies that are worse than WalMart.

Shaws (a local grocery chain) keeps many employees to less than 30 hours a week, but will insist on adding shifts if there is "need". Refuse a shift and lose the job. Also, as a union shop, all employees, regardless of the number of hours work, must pay union dues and fees, but only "full time" employees receive union benefits. ( a friend tells me that Shaw's is actually union owned, but I can't back that up.)

And to hurt local competitors, Shaw's insists on enforcement of blues laws (Sunday/holiday hours/closures, purchase of liquor) but then force employees to work those same days - they'll be open after all. And you can pick up your Sunday six-pack before noon.

I stopped shopping there.

There are some things I like about Walmart - I'm never treated to the sight of pierced eyebrows, lips or noses. Neatly dressed and groomed staff. In general, the staff is polite and helpful. Would I like to see them treat their employees (of all stripes - janitors to management) better - you bet. But I can safely say that about 80% of companies in this country.

Currently, corporate culture is such that profit and shareholder gains at quarter's end is more important than long term earnings and goals, customer satisfaction or even continued existence of the company.

Time to get off my soap box.

That is a little drastic and it's not what he meant. I am fully against this Patriot Act our dumbo president insists is for "our own good." The policy at a store which wants to see a recipt before you exit is not controlling me. I can take a second to get over myself and be humble and show the recipt. It only controls me if I want to steal and I can't which is what it's there for. We don't have to agree, I am more liberal where I draw the line on control and my perception of control is very different than yours. Do you think a cop should be able to stop a drunk driver because she's weaving? Or is that controlling?
