ads: OT?

Admittedly it has been some time since I posted here, or was able to scan the postings. It's hard when the 'puter won't leave its packing box.

However, I thought that advertisements were discouraged on this news group, but I see whole groups of them, which, unread, seem to have nothing to do with out topic at all at all.

Nothing to do with ads, which shouldn't be here, but nice to see you back again Carolyn.

Hi Carolyn:

Ads are discouraged in r.c.t.n. And I rarely see one, so I'm not sure where you are seeing whole groups of them. Usually, the only time I see an ad is when some spammer posts to a whole bunch of newsgroups. The only group I've seen recently were spammed ads last week from some idiot named chincerylovely, but those are not from the usual posters on r.c.t.n. And, of course, since we are unmoderated, we can't do too much about that except complain to the spammer's isp (and of course, killfile the cretin).

They shouldn't. If in doubt, you can check the FAQ: .

But the people who spam newsgroups don't READ the newsgroups. That's why spam is so destructive to discussion groups; they expect other people to read their posts but don't read anyone else's. They use groups as free advertising and contribute nothing in return.

Usually there's an abuse address you can forward it to in the headers of the post, if you're feeling proactive.
