An "art" composition question - reflections off of water.

I've been working on a couple of pieces. Finished one, the other is in work. A Seagull and a Pelican respectively. in looking at the light blue Kreinik blending filament I picked up yesterday, it seemed like it might be nice to highlight ever so slightly some areas of the distant waterline. But it's been a while (and will be probably October) before I can get down to the beach and in my minds eye, I can't quite decide the best way to do this aesthetically. Some of my prints around the house (Talbot) give me some ideas.

my first thought was to highlight the already lighter areas - but my memory of wavy-but-not-choppy waters actually makes me think of how in the smoother areas of the water (that is, neither dark, deep troughs nor crests or breakers) one would often see the glint of the sun. This would mean that what little highlighting I do - would be in the parts of the design that have the medium aqua tones. So... being that I'm not an artist, IMO, what makes the most sense to you?

water does not dominate these images so it would be subtle but I think it would brighten the pieces just a tad. They are otherwise made up of very neutral colors on Aida with an undyed linen-look to it.

of course, I'll experiment myself but wondering if the artists here would have more practiced insight.

ta muchly, k

The beads sound ok if you can find the very small ones.

On blending filaments, depending on the colors in your floss and the effect you want, here are some ideas: (all Kreinik blending filaments)

Bright Sparkes: try the opalesent filaments such as 032 (pearl) or if you want stronger glints, I would go for 025 (silvery grey), 001HL (hi-luster silver), or 019 (shiny med grey). Scatter the stiches around, don't put more than 2 or 3 together unless you want to hint at patterns in the water.

Dark Areas: 060 (Midnight), 085 (Peacock), or 019 (grey). The peacock filament is a dark filament that stitches up in a very different way than it looks, especially when used in scattered stitches. The midnight is also very dark, but does not have the reflective shine that you get with the peacock.

If you just want to emphasis the colors in the floss, just pick a filament that is close to the color used.

My 2-cents worth, at any rate.

If you can find hologram thread (YLI makes it, Madeira makes it, one of the sewing thread companies makes it and their name currently escapes me), that's what I'm using for the water in Flowers of Hawaii.

Comes in blue (actually turquoise), green, silver, dark grey, lavender, pink, red, gold. The blue, green, silver and dark grey have all found their way into water in my prior works.
