any other teaching suggestions for children?

I did my first needlework class with 3rd and 4th graders yesterday.

Chery's list of terms was very useful and I'll keep that in mind but I would love any other suggestions. Since I was taught my family and have had very few formal classes - I've only been an EGA member for a year - I'm not always sure I'm teaching things right.

For example, I thought it would be easier to teach the kids the waste knot method of starting, but since I always just hold the end and sew around it or do the loop method, I'm not so good at waste knots. Any suggstions?

And I'm embarrased to admit that while I understand the concept of frog I'm not sure how to explain it in such a way that the girls will get a laugh out of it like yours did - what did you say?

Thanks for all the help, Margaret from Midlothian, VA (I haven't been participating for a few months thanks to garage renovations and family visits but maybe now things will slow down and I can participate again ... in my dreams :-)

You're welcome!

Waste/away knots are not intuitive for many. Loop starts are easy and I like using the "secure as you go" method.

As they learned to unpick a row, I said "rip it, rip it". It took a few seconds - the "pun sense" isn't not well developed in all children.

Welcome back!

I am a self-taught cross stitcher. My first waste knot was funny - I put it almost right next to the first stitch. There isn't enough thread to bury so I have left the knot in!
