caron watercolours

Does anyone know of a place online with the best prices for the Watercolours. I am stitching Winter Sampler for my MIL for Christmas and never worked with them before, so don't know what a good price is.

Thanks, Victoria

I believe that the suggested retail price is $2.90 for a 10-yard skein. I personally would buy here:

for whatever I needed, as I've not gotten good service from a couple of other online stores that carry it.

If you are using them for cross-stitch, 1 ply of the thread is the equivalent of No. 8 size Pearl Cotton (DMC). The thread has the luster of pearl cotton as well.

I use them the same as pearl cotton 5...they are called for in a lot of canvaswork.

They are 3-strand, but you separate each strand from the "thread" (similar to the strands in 6-strand floss) and use them singly.

They are gorgeous, aren't they? Other makers of variegated threads besides Car> May I ask, how does one work with these threads? I noted they are

I LOVE the Caron threads, and used to collect them just to LOOK at, and run my fingers through - until I realised that even a single strand was just too thick for anything I wanted to stitch! They`re so expensive here in the UK, too!

There is no real color comparison possible for varigated threads. Each company starts with different color families and mixes them differently. Add in the fact that most of the varigated threads are hand dyed (there can be substantial differences between dyelots), and you can see why it's difficult to do a comparison chart based on color.

Most companies will have websites with color charts.

Now, size wise, a singly ply of Caron Watercolours is equivalent to a strand of size 5 perle cotton, a strand of Waterlilies is equivalent to a strand of size 8 perle cotton, and most of the other overdyed threads are floss.

Add me to the Cult of Caron. I'm trying to find ways to use them in everything.

I'm beginning to be a Needle Necessities disciple, also.

I found this website that give a good description of all Caron threads.

That would be Wildflowers, Waterlilies is the 12 stranded silk. It's always stuck me as odd that they have two yarns equivalent to common perle sizes, and 2 names starting with Water, and they are aren't the same. :-)

Thanks for the explanation. I just realized I had used it for Celtic Banner, but who can remember that far back!

I am not a sampler person, not my taste, but I did love Celtic Banner and Winter Sampler, which my MIL is going to die and go to heaven at Christmas. I can't wait to see her face.
