Does anyon do over-dying themselfs??

I have a pattern calling for over-dyed thread but around here that stuff goes 1 dollar plus. This pattern is huge and it will take several skeins of these stuff.

If you know how to over-dyed, please let me know.

It seems to me that this might be one of those cases where it is desirable, to say the least, to know how much floss is required to complete the project, *before* one starts even overdying process, let alone the stitching. Trying to reproduce the same color sometime in the future must be well nigh impossible, if you are overdying yourself. Just a thought, though oldtimers will recognize this same thought.

Karen C's method wasn't enough? I quote:

Quite frankly, that's pretty much the method I use too (although I use thickened Procion MX dyes and rinse before baking because that's what I have in the house). Wear gloves.

Personally, I just buy the overdyed threads unless I need a custom color scheme. By the time I get the dyes and the other chemicals and spend the time to do it, I've already spent more money than I would have buying the overdyed thread in the first place, and I've used up a lot of my stitching time.

Sometimes I use solid DMC instead of the overdye. Sometimes I use DMC varigated, or the newish Anchor multicolors. Sometimes I use a different overdye.
