I am not sure where the "charter" is these days, but the situation is much simpler than that. This newsgroup operates on a "text only" basis, and so uses a small amount of "bandwidth". Any non-text messages such as HTML or pictures take up a lot of bandwidth. If we take up too much bandwidth, ISPs will simply not carry RCTN traffic.

Some ISPs like mine, just drop them anyway so I just see a jumbled page of html stuff that makes no sense whatsoever. Pictures belong in binary groups.

Look in the AUP of your own server - it is always there - binaries (pictures etc) in binary groups and text in text only groups, such as rctn.

If you want to post pictures - of needlework - that can be done in the yahoo group RCTNP.

I believe it depends on the individual server and for those people who's server's do not drop them, if they are using a dialup service, your post could take them 20 minutes or so of wasted time downloading

- for nothing. If they are paying by the minute...expensive.

Reading the charter might tell you not to post pictures etc. but remember, if a group does not have "binary" anywhere in it's title, it is text only.

Mine simply shows no signature or attachment at all. It is definite about text only except in binary groups.

It depends on each person's ISP. Some will drop the HTML, some won't. Mine sends it on, but I've got my newsreader set to skip the HTML. Some readers won't accept a message with HTML attached, some will mangle the message.

A general rule for Usenet (newsgroups) is no pictures unless it's a binary group. Some ISPs will drop a text group that has pictures in it. (A picture is a *LOT* bigger than text.)

The problem with putting HTML or binaries in a non-binary group is that an ISP could *stop carrying the group*. Not just drop the offending message, but drop the _entire group_. Often with no warning.

It doesn't happen much anymore, but any ISP would be within its rights to do so. There are a lot of smaller ISPs which don't carry binary newsgroups at all, due to storage limitation and worries about infringement. If the non-binary newsgroups started carrying lots of HTML and binaries, they'd be dropped too.

I'm on the German server and they evidently strip them because I haven't seen any graphics or html.

Mine strips, but leaves me the mess and garbage. Personally, I HATE smileys, they are an abomination. If that's what was there, I bless my server for sparing me !
