PING: Owen Lowe

Please try to be a little more supportive of Al. I'm really worried about him. I recieved a private transmissiom from him earlier.I don't know whats going on but it's not good. From the way he acting I believe there is a strong possibility that we will lose Al forever in the next few days.

Please keep him in your prayers. Notal Kyder

Please explain 'loss'. I read this woodturning newsgroup to learn about woodturning. If I want to read silliness then there are probably groups out there that will provide me with all I could ask for. I don't think his posts are appropriate. It is easy for me to put him in the killfile, and I have. He then reposts using a different name. This behavior is intended to frustrate attempts to block these posts. I believe that if his posts were without malice then they would all be using the same name, to allow the killfile to work for those of us who do not wish to read his messages. His posts have been offensive, insulting different nationalities and religions. I am quite surprise that some of the folks that participate in this group condone this behavior.

Unfortunately as a result of one person my killfile has grown out of proportion to the offense. I have reached the point where everyone who reposts his text is added to my killfile. This is my loss because a lot of these folks have really provided me some great information and have been responsible for improving my skills.

Does that mean that your skills are gonna suck now because of the posts? er, rather the lack thereof?

Many (most?) of us who don't wish to read his messages simply skip them. They are neither so numerous nor so large that it is a huge drain on bandwidth to just d/l them along with the rest of the messages and then delete them rather than read them...unless you lack the willpower to not read them.

They're only insulting if you read them and are insulted by them. If you never see them then you can't be insulted by them. And don't read "ignoring" as "condoning."

Does that maybe tell you something? (Hint: Maybe you've taken "offense" out of all proportion to the offense.)

Many, many folks are able to separate the gold from the dross on this newsgroup w/o suffering severe psychological trauma or hardly even any internal bleeding from a few silly, easily-ignorable posts. If you find your head exploding in spite of 17 wraps of duct tape, at the mere sight of one of "Al's" posts, then perhaps it's time to switch to decaf.

To all the rest of you friends, aquaintences, and addicts, I apologize for the shouting.

Quite alright. I too got a private transmission, but in the interest of decency I wasn't going to mention it. %-) Dave in Fairfax

I, too, have received a private posting from Al, but since it was private I felt that I shouldn't pass it along without his concurrence. It was very pleasant and not abusive at all. Al seemed to be a bit hurt by some of the responses of the members of this group. Let's be kind and not shout at each other!

Ummmm. (Just for brevity's sake, I'm replying to Leif's post instead of all that seemed to have a similar mssg.) It wasn't me who said Al sent them a private note - it was Notal Kyder. I was just replying to Notal pinging me on the group.

Owen, I understand entirely if you don't want people to know that you've been chatting off-line with Al. Don't worry, I won't tell. ;-)

I stand corrected. Now that I know he is a beloved contributor I'll certainly be careful about what I think and write.
