The rec.crafts.woodturning Charter

The purpose of the newsgroup is to facilitate open discussion about all forms of woodturning. It will provide a global forum to discuss tools, techniques, styles, materials, shows and competitions, education and educational materials. It will also serve as a platform for international information sharing among members of turning organizations such as the American Association of Woodturners, the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain or the New Zealand Woodturners Association. All styles and skill levels are welcome, from art turners to production turners, beginners to masters, amateurs and professionals. Discussion of ornamental turning is also welcome. While the principal focus is wood, discussion of use of other non-ferrous materials that are turned freehand on a lathe such as Corian, bone, etc. is appropriate. Discussion of turning metal on a lathe should generally be referred to rec.crafts.metalworking, but discussion of woodturning on metal lathes is appropriate. While cross-posting to related groups should generally be avoided, it is recognized that certain topics, for example questions related to lathe fabrication, wood properties, carving and decoration of turned objects, or photography of turned objects might legitimately be crossposted to other groups.

Commercial postings (advertisements) from for-profit entities on topics directly relevant to turning equipment, tools, materials, classes or similar subject matter are permitted at a frequency no greater than once every two weeks for a given establishment. This limitation refers specifically to offers to buy, sell or promote turning related items by people with a financial interest in the outcome. People involved in commercial activities related to turning are encouraged to become regular contributors to the group. Non-profit organizations announcing meetings, workshops, or conventions may post more frequently if necessary.

As in all rec groups, binary files or graphic reproductions are prohibited. However, posts including a URL pointing to such binary files or web sites related to woodturning are encouraged.
