I guess I'm leaving

It is with heavy heart that I might as well start saying Good Bye to the group. Just got informed by my ISP that they are discontinuing newsgroups as of Sept 30th, this year. They claim that the demand has dropped so signficantly that they will no longer offer them. I really don't know of any other way to get on the newsgroup, so I guess I will have to bid fond farewell to all. Eventhough I haven't been overly active on the group, I will still miss being able to read all of the notes, jokes, etc., that each of you post. Also, certainly have enjoyed the pics of all the projects that each of you have worked on. Then there are the tips that I have come across that I sometimes had never heard of or thought of that have helped me. But at least until the end of the month, I'll still be around and reading all the goodies that each of you has to share. Hope all is well with everyone and that life is good to all. BTW, I should be having another grandbaby too, before I have to sign off for the last time. DD is due any day and anxiously awaiting the chance to hold the little darling. This will be my 9th grandchild, but also have 4 steps and 2 greats, for a total of 15 all together. Take care, God bless,

Oh my, can't you get the newsgroup on Google? That's how I access the group. It's easy, much easier than dealing with a daily digest. I think if you have web access then you should be able to stay here with us. Just bookmark the website while in an open browser and then you can come back any time you want. I would hate to see you leave because of technical reasons.

Marlys -- mine (Comcast) stopped a year ago! I use news.albasani.net though Windows Mail (previously on Outlook Express).

It has been GREAT! Easy to use -- easy to set up and FREE!!!!

Check it out before you fade away!

hey marley, there is more than one way to skin a cat. as well as Kates access thru news.albasani.net i have two other servers added to my outlook express, in case one is acting silly, i can usually pick up the traffic on the other one.

news.aioe.org eternal-september.org

the second one you have to register online to access but both are read thru outlooke express and iirc can be added to any windows mail reader. for each acct you have to click tools/accounts/mail tab click on add, put in the server as written above. i use a bogus email addy and return addy on both accts so my email addy can not be harvested if anyones computer wants to try it. as long as the part after @ is totally bogus you're good to go. then hit apply/ok/whatever it shows. they should then show up on the left hand menu of your email reader under the inbox, outbox, sent etc. if you get stuck holler and i'll try for better instructions. oh yea, link for eternal-sept is

formatting link
of info on there to set up the computer too.keep in mind you'll again have to download the full list of ngs on each of those two servers, tho doesnt really take that long. then subscribe (on the email reader) to the ngs you want to read.easy peasy really, just give it a go and holler if you get stuck.jeanne

I get it via nntp.aioe.org since Comcast dropped usenet. Does it work with the "news" address too?

I've been posting through google since my isp dropped newsgroups several years ago. It's okay, once I got used to it I liked it just fine. But I've encountered a lot of, well, sort of a "stigma" on other newsgroups towards google posters. I have no idea why anyone would *care* what members/posters use as long as it's easily readable.

There's even a poster on another group who "announces" from time to time that he will block/killfile all posts originating from google.

The only drawback I see is that it's a little more awkward than my old newsreaders and doesn't offer killfile capabilities.

I do know most spammer posts originate from google / gmail, but I don't, and it always irritates me that I feel like I need to apologize for being a dreaded google-poster.

Just the .02 from a mouth-breathing Google poster, LOL.

Hi Sherry,

IMO, that's not much different than the old PC/Mac rivalry. What people like, they like, and what works for them, works for them. Ignore it - it's just silly.

This (again IMO) stems from resistance to the obsolescence of Usenet. I miss Usenet too, and wish it would stay, but I'm not so whacked as to take it to those extremes. Blocking/Killfiling is fine if it makes people happy, but I judge posters on the value of their content, their attitudes, behavior, etc., rather than where they post from - that's just silly too.

The killfile ability still lies with clicking on a post or not clicking on it. If it's part of a thread, you can click on the poster's name and it will condense that post/reply to a bare header.

Maybe things have changed. It used to be that spammers originated mostly from Usenet. I'm surprised that complaints to Google would be ineffective.

Well, I'm sure many of us could write volumes on that and how to deal with it, but it'd be one of those neverending threads, and I'm just too tired this morning. If you'd really like to discuss it, drop me an email.

I choose to remain dubious about just whom the mouth-breathers really are... ;-)

When AT&T dumped ng's, a friend recommended I use

It was an absolutely seamless transition. It took five minutes to configure it within Outlook Express. I can't stand using google for groups. It doesn't thread properly and it's incredibly slow and cumbersome.

How odd. I tried to use this group through another venue and found I couldn't. I love the Google interface. It lets me see the original post and read all the responses or only the new ones, keeps me informed when new responses are added to old posts and generally makes me happy by being easy enough for my brain to handle first thing in the morning. I haven't even found it clunky. I have a hard time with Yahoo groups. I get lost, can't remember the original post and lose track of which response is to which post. And I hate having to deal with digests that come via email. I've quit a couple groups just because of that. That said, this is the only official "newsgroup" that I visit regularly.

nothing at all to apologize for, Sherry. i'm the one who is sorry for giving you the impression there is anything at all wrong with using google. its just another server in the great scheme of usenet. i just dont like using google as much as reading thru outlook express. i've got no worrys about anyone else using it tho. so please accept my apologys for any hard feelings i might have generated. i surely never meant any harm to anyone. backing slowly into my safe little cave down south, j.

oh verizon, more likely the newsgroups (usenet) causes too much traffic thus either competing for bandwidth or attention from their own services FiOS etc...

many other sources for newsgroups (usenet) which others have mentioned.

I think sewgirls acts more as a portal or fancy interface to the usenet/newsgroups much like google gives an web interface to usenet groups.
