Re: My computer nerd Hubby on this taking over crap

He has read all the posts made by these umm "people" and is totally going THIS IS BS.. this groups is ALREADY worldwide.. Its ALREADY accessable to ANYONE who wants to get in.. ITS A NEWSGROUP.. which gives free access to anyone.. its not password protected.. you can access it thru GOOGLE.. its not the best no.. but ITS ACCESSABLE.. which makes THIS ng OFFICIAL..

I'm not saying I'm in favor of the RFD here, but this ng is definitly not "official". The way you set up the group and write the charter has to do with how a group becomes official. Not if it's accessable through Google or not.

I COULD NOT access it via my newsserver this summer for that very reason. I wish I had saved the letter I received from my server. I was using the German server since my ISP in NH did not carry newsgroups. I wrote to them and asked them to carry r.c.s. but I received an email back saying that they could not carry r.c.s. because it is not an official group.

Could I have used Google? I guess, but I tried. I was using dial up and it was painfully slow for me to even attempt to read it so I just didn't read it.

Soooo, I am just trying to say that while yes, some of this stuff with the attempted RFD may be policital, there are valid reasons why they are trying to do it.

On a final note though, I will admit

So Jenn, please take the time to explain the pros and cons of being official. I know I am not newsgroup literate in the aspects these people are referring to. All I now is that I did a search for scrapbooking in news-server.se.rr.com and I found this group. If I couldn't get it here, I would go to Google. Only because that is the only way I know how. I don't have the time to research all this other stuff they are talking about but you seem to understand it a little better. Help me out with some info if you can.

I think the thing that P***es me off the most is these people make a proposal and a majority of us say we're not interested and we are attacked for wanting to be small and attacked because we encourage people to ask their server to carry the group but we don't want to be "Official". I don't think anyone has made a decent, explanatory proposal that most of us could understand. Presentation makes all the difference.

Then you have Rob, who has to use a word with sexual undertones in his responses to make people feel inferior or degraded. Not that this has anything to do with being "official", but has everyone noticed the number of sh*tty posts we've been receiving since all this started. And take a look at the people who are taking time out until it blows over - this is what I fear happening if more people can access our group - the ones we really care about will all leave because the atmosphere is so gloomy.

I understand that you had problems accessing the group this summer so I thought you may be a little more informed - enough to pass some info on to me. This is the only newsgroup I access on a regular basis and I hate to see this environment.

Well, I am very far from an expert on this subject. I will admit to lurking at news.groups a bit and do find the process interesting.

All I know is that you were able to access r.c.s. because your newsserver carries it. Here at home, comcast carries it so I don't have a problem here. However, not all news servers do carry groups that are not official. The free German one I use this summer would not carry it because they don't carry ng's that didn't go through official means to be created. They also don't carry binary groups.

Google is fine, but if you have dial up it can be ridiculously slow. I have cable at home, but wasn't going to pay for cable up at the lake. Also, not everyone can afford cable modem or a more expensive isp which would be more likely to carry the newsgroups. So....they find a free news server and a cheap isp.

I completely understand. I think the reception may have been warmer if this person had ever been a participant instead of barging in and posting an RFD. I'll admit, I was going to come to this group this summer and ask why it wasn't official, but I just didn't bother. I'm pretty sure (or at least I'd like to think) that people would have been very polite about it because I have been a member of r.c.s. for a year. Maybe not the most prolific poster, but still a member.

I also completely understand this also, but that's Usenet. Anyone can post and it's up to the group members to drive away (ignoring and reporting abuse is the best tactic) trolls and discouraging spam and advertisments. I see this all the time in other groups and it really isn't a major problem. One of the groups I post to is misc.kids. It can get heated in there at times, but usually it's when it has to do with CPS, c*rcumcision, or sp*anking. Those are hot topics anyway. I don't think that there's much controversey over the latest and greatest scrappbooking tool, lol.

Well, I get the feeling that this group is the only ng that many here read. I think I'm subbed to about 8 right now and I've been reading them for about

7 years . It might be good for you to find another ng that interests you and lurk there for a while just to see how different ng's work. Really, it's not all that different. Members just need to be more aware of trolls and spam.

Also, ftr, I am *NOT* saying that I am for or against an RFD, I just wanted to give my .02 since I have felt the frustration of not being able to access it.

Thanks for not attacking me. :)
