I admit to laughing, but alas there are some well documented incidents during the Sydney Olympics from people in the northern hemisphere who wanted to know if holding the events at night would disadvantage the athletes. I guess not all were at school when the planetary orbits were covered!

I had a chuckle about it, and totally agree with Cheryl, some people don't understand the sence behind it.
And some, I have to admit, don't comprehend (am not talking about kids), that it is day in Australia, when the Northern Hemisphere snuggles in bed.

Northern & southern hemispheres? It's longitude not latitude that determines the timezones

Err... Sibille, the difference between Northern and Southern Hemispheres relates to the seasons, not to the hours of light and dark. We're in the middle of summer here in Oz.

John,
thanks for the education..., you should have noticed by now I live in Cairns. I know that time zones are determined by longitudes, not the hemispheres. However, countries like Germany belong to the Northern Hemisphere and have night, when we have day, right? That's why so many people do relate rather to north and south than longitudes.

Hi Sibille,
I did take a look at your web site and noted you were in Oz, and I was wondering where. One of these years I'd love to get a proper look at Cairns. (I'm in Brisbane.) All that reef and stuff and I've never had a good look at it.

The confusion comes from thinking of a country on the other side of the world. To simplify things: Korea is in the Northern Hemisphere but they have day at essentially the same time you do. But they are in winter now while you are in summer.
